EA or RA? For UGA

Im deciding on whether to apply for early admisssion or regualr admission. Im about to take the October, November and December Sats, and also Acts. The problem is that my sat scores arn't that great. I would avg my score of being about around a 1750-1850/ 650-700 math, 560-600 CR, 450-500 W (writing included), and Act around 27.
I been doing few of clubs and also a sport. (cross country).
Right now I have around a 4.1 wieghted, and a 3.9 unweighted with 3 Ap classes, and also around 5-7 Honor/Adv classes, my ranking at school is around 50. It is a competitive school with a magnet problem (If this info really matters). With around 500+community service hours and leadership hours during the summer. I was wondering what my chances are in getting into UGA. Thank you.

From the UGA Admissions Blog:
Here are my two suggestions when looking at EA vs RD: First, look at the First-Year Profile for previous years, and determine where the applicant would fall within grades, curriculum and test scores. Since Early Action (EA) admitted students are at the top end of the group, if an applicant is not in the mid-50% or higher in at least two of the areas, they should rethink applying EA. Secondly, the applicant should ask if they would like to have first semester grades or SAT/ACT scores from after October in their file before a decision is made. If you want UGA admissions to see more about you, apply RD.

First year Profile for the 2010 Applicants:
GPA Middle 50% of All Enrolled First-Year Students: 3.68 - 4.0
SAT-I Middle 50% of Admitted First-Year Students (CR&M): 1190 - 1360
SAT-I Middle 50% of Admitted First-Year Students 1800 - 2080
ACT Middle 50% of Admitted First-Year Students: 27 -31

Based on your stats, Your SAT and ACT are at the low end of the middle 50% and your GPA is at the high end. So it could go either way, there is no harm applying EA, the worst thing that could happen would be that you get deferred. I don’t think you would be outright denied.

Needcollege: Do you have actual scores for the SAT/ACT or are those your predictions?

For EA, only the October scores will be considered. For regular admission, the later dates would be considered.

Your GPA is great and your CR and Math scores are good. Do you have any ideas as to why your Writing section is significantly lower? I would put serious efforts into prepping for that section of the SAT/ACT. Ask your english teacher at school for some suggestions.

There is a small possibility that you could be denied in the EA process. Talk to you guidance counselor. The application has been changed a little this year. For EA I think you do get to list activities, etc. But the Part II application might give you a chance to highlight achievements, etc. that otherwise wouldn’t come out in the shorter Part I application.

Best of luck to you.

Yes, The only part where I have difficulty is the finding an error in the sentence. My Grammar skills are very low, which causes me to either get half the problem in the section wrong or skipping the majority completely in that portion of the writing test.

you should apply early, i got in early with somewhat similar scores/GPA/classes

I’m a student with a 4.0 my high School career. My school only offers 1 AP class in English and I’m taking that my senior year; however, I took the honors English my 10th and 11th grade years. I have taken Biology, Chemistry and Physics but they were not honors or AP. I have taken 2 years of Latin and 2 years of Greek. I have not made a B my high school career and I have taken the most difficult classes available at my high school. A have an 1140 for my SAT (not including writing) and a composite 26 on my ACT.

My question is this…Do I have a chance to be accepted for EA or at least deferred? Or am I doomed to being denied if I attempt EA? I forgot to mention that my questions above are based on me trying to get into the University of Ga.

tryntogetin: If you create a new thread, you’ll likely receive more views and responses.

In all honesty I suspect your SAT is too low for EA admissions. As noted in gamomof3’s post, only 25% of admitted students scores lower than 1190. Your GPA is big plus, especially since UGA places more weight on GPA than standardized test scores. If you can raise your SAT by 100 points (or more, ideally) I think you’ll have a much stronger chance of being accepted. Having said that, the only way to know for sure is to apply.

Best of luck.

I agree with jablalf. Your scores are on the low side and I would recommend taking again. Georgia superscores the SAT so your score could go up. How many times have you taken it?
UGA does put more weight on GPA. You said you didn’t take very many honors or AP course, did you take the most rigorous courses offered at your school?
Depending on the rigor, you may get in EA but I think you would most likely be deferred.

Are you planning to take SAT or ACT again?

gamomof3 - I did take the most difficult classes offered at my school and unfortunately they only offered “honors English” in 10th and 11th grade (which took) and AP english in 12th (which I am currently taking). I just took the ACT for the 2nd time and hoping that my ACT scores will get a little better. I already took the SAT twice with similar results.

tryntogetin-you mention the rigor in your English classes. What about math, science, etc? Did you take the most rigorous classes in those areas as well? I think whether you get in EA or deferred will most likely depend on rigor.

When I spoke to an adcom from UGA she said that if you are not happy with your SATs, you should not apply EA bc is the 1st thing they look at to weed out the applications. It is up to you.

Hello everyone, this is my first post ever on this website. (I hate to feel like another chance me guy)
Like many others, i’m going through the college admissions process, and so far UGA has been my number one choice.
I’m from the State of Louisiana where i attend the top high school in the state and also nationaly ranked.

My grades aren’t spectacular: partying and “having fun” my sophomore and junior ruined my chances of much better stats, but i believe i’ve matured and that phase is past me… I regret the last two years of my life and have written an essay explaining that phase of my life and where I am now.

GPA: core 3.0… First quarter of senior year- 3.71 (taking all basics)
Rank: top 50% of my class
ACT: 29 Composite (looking to get the 30)

E.C.: 4 year intramerial sports, 2 years of peer support, 3 years baseball, 2 years of cheerleading, 2 years of student government… 125+ hours communiy service working in hospitals with heart attack patients.

Work: weekends in my mother’s bail bonding office… will recieve my own bonding license in upcoming months (passed state test) also work in an Italian restaurant bussing tables, blah blah…

DO i have a legitimate shot of UGA admissions? Other’s help would give me peace of mind wether it be a yes or no…

Thank You All

Hello everyone! I just want to know my chances of UGA EA?
Here are my stats:

GPA UW: 3.97

AP’s: 5

ACT : 29- English 27- Math, 10 out of 12 on writing, 28 Composite
Race: Asian
Activites: Varsity Cheerleading Captain (cheering for 4 years) and has been in many clubs since freshman year.

ajo2011: i would try RD so that you can explain yourself, then I think you have a chance for them to know you better. Good luck
