EA Programs and Deep Springs

This is not until next year, but we are really in a quandry at our house.

DS first choice is Deep Springs, by far.

But his other reach schools have much higher acceptance rates in their ED programs than RD, as you would expect.

So if Deep Springs is his first choice, he's really shut out of the ED round everywhere else, right?

Did anyone else face this?

Yes. If it is by far his first choice, it should be worth the risk, no?

Yes, agree. But with a 7.5% admit rate, and probably fairly self-selecting, it's quite a substantial risk. But the whole college admissions process has turned into a real roll of the dice.

And I'm sorry I didn't say it ealier, but good luck to you. Hope you get in!

If it's EA, he can apply to other EA colleges at the same time. It's not ED, but at least he has more options!

Like Chicago, right?

Yeah :). I applied EA to both Georgetown and UChicago. There are others, like MIT and CalTech.

And how did that go, if I can be nosey?

If your son applies to an ED college, and is accepted, then he HAS to go there, unless some sort of financial catastrophe has happened to your family. That is the reason students should apply ED colleges ONLY if it IS their first choice. If he wants to go to Deep Springs, then he can apply to any EA or rolling admissions program at the same time. Young men who are outstanding enough to be accepted to Deep Springs are likely to be accepted at other very selective colleges. He does know it is only a 2 year program, right?, so he will have to apply to other colleges anyway at the end of his 2 years there.

I was accepted to both Georgetown and UChicago EA. Recently, I received a Likely Letter from Dartmouth and Regents to UCB.

Good luck to your son :)

Thanks menloparkmom. Yes, he's aware that it's a two year program - and it seems that you can go most anywhere after a succesful experience at Deep Springs.

Congratulations tchaikovsky! I hate to be dense, but can I assume that you are also still in the running at Deep Springs? Where are you leaning toward?

My son's clear second choice is Chicago. We're heading there in May for a HS Juniors Open House.

Haha, sorry if I made it seem as if I applied to Deep Springs. One of my friends did apply, but I'm not sure what his results were. As for me, I'm leaning towards Princeton if I'm lucky enough to get in.

Okay, I'll think good thoughts of eating clubs for you.

My son was also interested in Deep Springs, but after visiting U of Chicago, he knew he would love to go there more. Other schools you might want to check out are Reed, and Brown. If he hasn't read it, have him check out the book Cool Colleges, which has sections about both Reed as well as Deep Springs. BUT, also be sure he applies to a safety he would be happy at. Next year there are even more students applying the college for the same # of openings than this year! Yikes!

Thanks SBDad. The only bit of advice I can think to give your son is to become well aquainted with Deep Springs. This will make the risk he takes by applying to DS more calculated. I would suggest the following:

Query for 'Deep Springs' on google. I read well into the 10th page of results. If nothing else, it's interesting. The things you read on the internet should, however, be taken with a grain of salt. The things I read often contained gross exageration, misrepresentation, etc.

Find some alums to talk to. Unless you're a proficient internet stalker, however, this may prove to be difficult.

Good luck.
