EA question

^^ Agree with researching4emb. S’s stats were slightly lower than upstate daughter’s.

BTW, I believe I erroneously posted–weeks ago, another thread-- that S2 did not receive notice of his merit aid with his EA acceptance. Actually, he did receive notice of the Presidential Award with his acceptance, but had to wait for the need based financial aid award until later in the spring. We were a bit surprised that he was not offered work study. Essentially, the need based aid brought the COA in line with some of the other schools where he was accepted and had been awarded work-study.

My theory is that compared to students at some of the higher priced LACs, which offered more FA and merit aid, we are not affluent. (No surprise!)
Relative to many of the Clark students, we may be slightly higher on the socio-economic scale than at the other schools where S applied.

At the end of first semester, S has spent very little of the money he saved from his summer job. Merlin-dad and I are pleasantly surprised! I think that in a more affluent school, or a different part of town, he may have been tempted to spend more money.
Of course, the frugality could end when he tires of cafeteria food!

Thank you 4emb and merlin for the encouraging words. Am keeping my fingers crossed. D really liked Clark–one drawback is Worcester. She has heart set on Boston. She has heard from 2 colleges already and waiting to hear from 7 more before deciding. It will really come down to money. So glad she doesn’t have a number 1 favorite.

Merlin, did you see ClarkAlum’s earlier post about safety concerns regarding Worcester? We weren’t that concerned about the location, and my D loves the access to Boston and is used to rather rough urban neighborhoods, but it was a little unsettling to see his/her post, since he/she is a Clark booster. Wondering if your son thinks there are any reasons for concern.

And upstatemom, just to give you some confidence, my D got the Presidential scholarship with lower stats than your D: 30 ACT, 3.7uw/4.05w GPA, 5 honors and 1 AP soph/junior year and 3 APs this year. Plus a normal amount of ECs, nothing remarkable.

She is so honored and happy! But she has more to hear from, so we’ll see. Right now Clark is in the top 2…

I read on Clark’s website that a lot of these merit scholarships seem to go to students interested in science- My D is undecided but most interested in cognitive science (which most schools don’t have), psych, sociology, neuroscience, and women’s studies. I know that she listed as much of this as possible on the app but don’t know if that will qualify her for those scholarships.

4emb- what other colleges has your D applied to?

^^^
She applied to six: Clark, Dickinson, Conn, American, Goucher and Muhlenberg; actually, the Muhlenberg isn’t in yet, because it’s not due until mid-Feb. and she’s waiting on the semester grades. Dickinson and Goucher were EA, so she should hear by 2/1; the others will be later.

She’s visited all except Goucher (which her GC recommended as a safety) and can see herself happy at all. No single favorite, but a top three: Dickinson, Clark and Conn, with Muhlenberg a favorite, too. Right now Clark has moved to the #1 spot, of course, because they want her!

How about your D?

Yes, I did see ClarkAlum’s post. I didn’t respond because i couldn’t articulate coherent, succinct thoughts, although many things crossed my mind.

Also, I wanted to talk to S about it because he is there and I am not.
As I type this, he should be arriving back on campus after the break. I never did ask him further about the safety issue, although we have discussed it before.

Essentially, I think S is not intimidated, but he rarely is, even if he should be. He is tall muscular, and runs fast. We live in a rural-ish area and he has not needed street smarts-- until now. I think he is developing an urban awareness.

He knows a student who was robbed of an ipod just a couple of blocks from the campus. No violence, but now no ipod, either. I had the impression that S took this as a warning to be careful not to flaunt Anything, even an ipod. OTOH, I wonder if a student had no money or ipod to hand over, would the robber become angry and assault the student?

The university notifies students when they have news of unsafe situations/muggings.–perhaps through an email alert. I know several people, including women, who have recently graduated and/or are seniors. They have stated that they have never felt unsafe at Clark.
I will note, however, that one of the Clark grads who attended nursing school at nearby Becker College found Becker to be very unsafe.

My D just got her letter today! She has been offered a Traina scholarship, which is very exciting. I just wish all this terrible East Coast weather would end – she’s becoming quite determined to go to California for college if she can. But this offer certainly puts Clark up there in her possibilities!

who got scholorship money and how much? and stats please?
i got 28,000 with 7,000 per year. just looking to compare

socrates, my D got the same as you.

I got 40k (10k a year) with a 4.37 weighted gpa, 3.85 unweighted, 1810 SAT (1100 Reading + Math) and a couple of extra curriculars, mainly stuff having to do with the honor societies.

what is the best freshman dorm to apply to? there are two renovated dorms are those the best? how early should i apply for the best chances of the best rooms?

freshmen dorms are sanford, johnson, wright, and bullock. i lived in bullock my freshmen year. its the best location on campus, not even the upper class dorms can beat the location. i lived in johnson my sophomore year, the year before it became more freshmen focused. it sucked living there as a sophomore. i personally hated living on that side of campus because it was far from my classes and friends.

wright and bullock are the newly renovated dorms. i haven’t been inside bullock, but i’ve been in wright a few times to check it out. it looks nice.

edit:

i forgot to mention dodd is also an option if you’re a girl. i know a few girls who lived/still live there. they like it. its pretty nice and if i still lived on campus i would live there.

More great news!

A few weeks ago I got an e-mail saying I got in with $120,000 scholarship (the e-mail said it is a combination of my CSS Profile and merits, so… is that fin-aid or merit aid?? lol xD)

Just now I got another e-mail saying I’m selected for the Global Scholars Program, with $2500 per year stipend (can someone please define stipend for me? I really have no idea what it means in context), and not less than $15000 in scholarship per year. Now I am wondering whether this is in addition to, or inclusive of my previous scholarship. (If it is in addition to, I’m through the roof right now!) I already e-mailed admissions about this and am really thrilled right now! :D

does anyone know when they would release the css and fasfa money, i already got 28000 frommerit but there should be another package with the need based financial aid too right?

Dre, “stipend” usually means money for you to spend on whatever you deem necessary for your education, like books and perhaps travel. Fantastic news on your amazing scholarship!!

Drelnis- if you don’t mind, would you share your basic stats with us?-- SAT/ACT scores, GPA, APs etc. Would love to know how one qualifies for the fantastic merit aid you received. Congratulations on your great achievement!

Sure here are my stats- Small British curriculum high school in Thailand

3.83 GPA UW (3.88 is highest in school, but with course load smaller than mine, my courseload is heaviest in school’s recent history :))

2170 SAT, 740 WR, 760 Math, 670 CR in 2 takes

President of Student Council, Theatre Association (puts on productions every year, I write and direct mostly and also act), Music Club (puts on short concerts twice a year), Community Service Club, assistant Guidance Counselor (help friends put their application together as well as fill in forms for the real GC, take the mail and arrange viewbooks and stuff), enrolled at Territorial Defense military school, just graduated yesterday, am a sergeant in the army, taking music classes at local music conservatory, has Grade 8 piano distinction certificate from Trinity College’s piano exam, am assistant librarian (basically helps school librarian out in her job).

Thanks so much for posting and good luck at Clark. My D had has similar stats (but not the great Thailand hook and military angle and very different ECs). So it will be interesting to see if A. she gets admitted and B. if she gets merit aid.

Your D applied RD? Good luck to her  And coming from Thailand is considered an advantage? I thought being Asian + foreign is an UNhook xD
