ea,scea,ed ?? what?

could someone please explain to me the procces of applying through these methods. in terms of if you apply to one uni through method x you cant apply any where else.

thanks

EA is just early action. You can apply to any number of EA schools you want.

SCEA is single-choice early action. You can only apply to one SCEA school but the decision is not binding, so you are welcome to apply to as many RD schools as you want. ED is binding early decision. You can only apply to one ED school but as many additional EA schools as you wish, but if accepted you must attend (the only exception is withdrawing due to financial concerns)

**Under the SCEA policy, it is actually possible to apply early to another school through Rolling or Early Action if that school is publicy funded. IE, one can apply to Harvard and also rolling to UMich and early to SUNY Stony Brook. This is a good idea if you want to get your public safeties down first.

EA schools include Georgetown, MIT, Chicago, etc.
SCEA schools include Harvard, Yale, and Stanford
ED schools include Dartmouth, Columbia, Cornell, Princeton, and most other high or middle tier private schools

Schools like to use ED because it protects their yield and therefore their USNews ranking. Schools with high yield such as HYS like to use SCEA because it gives them a larger and more diverse pool of applicants to choose from.

thanks so much!
