Good God…
How many of you did the Tulane personalized app?

Is this Tufts Syndrome?

Do u think they even looked at our applications?!?!

I did the personalized app. They spammed the hell out of my email for months requesting I do their app. Then when I send it in EA because it’s one of my top choices, I get deferred as a URM with above average stats and SATs.

Ehazoo, same here. They bothered me in mail and email and then defer me…?

My S also got deferred… 2200 SAT’s 3.6 GPA from a top prep school, Eagle Scout, 1500 Community Service hrs, tons of leadership with a national leadership position, works, commutes 3 hrs a day to school, and has great LOR’s. Was a bit of a shock, but then again, he didn’t do the “Why Tualne” essay, and it is definitely not one of his top choices. He has been admitted to another school, but deferred at UVM too.

I feel a bit better now. Sounds like a lot of people got deferred!

I got accepted, and I did the personalized app. 4.1 WGPA, 32 ACT, 2110 superscored SAT, 4 languages, tons of ECs and leadership positions, and although I’m enthusiastic about Tulane, I didn’t have the chance to attend meetings or whatever…I did the ‘Why Tulane?’ essay, though. I got no money at all, whereas my friend who has about the same grades and a lower score than me got $19,000…? I also don’t understand why the people who got deferred didn’t get accepted. Admissions seem to be more skewed than ever this year!

i got accepted to Tulane Honors program and got a $25,000/year scholarship (distinguished scholar award). I did the personalized app or whatever and didn’t do the “Why Tulane” essay.

I have a 2110 sat, 4.5W 3.97 UW GPA from the #5 public school in California (according to newsweek), I’m captain of both varsity lacrosse and soccer, Nation honors society, like 300 hours of volunteer work…nothing outstanding. Although, everyone who read my essay thought it was fantastic.

First, Tulane absolutely does not practice “Tufts syndrome”. One look at the yield tells you that.

Second, this is only the second year they have had the “Why Tulane” essay. This exact same thing happened last year, and in most cases the people with high stats that got deferred never did anything to tell Tulane they were truly interested. 5boys is the perfect example. I know it says the essay is optional, but that is a kind of test to see if you really have any interest at all or are just using it as a safety. There are always exceptions, but based on last year and what seems to be happening now, this is definitely the case.

If in fact Tulane really was just a safety and you only applied because you got the app and it was free and you really have no intention of going, then other than a little ego deflation (which it shouldn’t have that effect on you anyway based on the real reason you got deferred) you really shouldn’t care if you got deferred. It makes perfect sense from Tulane’s point of view. If you really want Tulane, you will let them know this. If not, then they made the right call.

I 100% agree with fallenchemist… my S wasn’t using it as a safety, and did like a lot of things about Tulane, but his heart is with the small LAC. He deserved the deferral and there is no hard feelings on Tulane’s part. I mean his CA essay was about climbing the highest peaks in CA… and there are NO high peaks in LA. He will end up where he is meant to be.

LOL 5boys. The highest “peak” in NOLA is a manmade dirt mound, I think.

I think you said it so well. He will absolutely end up at the right place, at least let’s hope so. Best of luck for his admission to the LAC.

fallenchemist,

What do you recommend I do if I had the stats to get in but was deferred? I sent my admissions rep an email basically saying I was disappointed in their decision and reaffirmed that Tulane was a top choice for me despite my inability to visit campus. Is there anything else I can do besides wait?

Voicee - my stats are on either page 13 or 14

There is also a thread about difficulty in registering for classes, as the last two years, the freshman class sizes are larger than anticipated. It would not be unusual to defer more applicants at this stage, so admissions can get a better sense of the numbers at regular decision time.

I would encourage all those who are truly interested in attending Tulane to stay in appropriate contact with their regional admissions counselor.

I got deferred ![]()
GPA: 3.7 W (idk my unweighted one)
SAT: 520 M 650 CR 640 W
Good EC’s and unique leadership/volunteer stuff
I’ve worked 2 jobs for all HS, I’m from a supercompetitive HS in New Jersey.
Tulane is my reach :(

I have a question about admissions: would tulane accept two students from the same Florida public high school who are pretty equivalent academically?

Of course. Tulane accepts many students from the same high schools. My old high school usually sends about 6 every year, and that is from Missouri. That’s how many go to Tulane, which means they accept even more.

Thanks fallenchemist! That makes me worry a little less about my deferment haha
