I’d love to hear feedback from parents/students who have experience with DU. Denver was high on her list based on research. We toured the campus this fall AFTER she applied but before she was accepted. I am not sure if it was our particular tour, but we left disappointed. Our tour didn’t include any academic buildings or classrooms. Most of the tour was spent walking around outside (the campus is very pretty)—but we saw very few students or interaction between students even though it was a weekday. During the tour of the dorm—there was gum (several chewed pieces) stuck to the door leading into the hall of the dorm. The hall itself was filthy. The room we were shown was very old and worn (I’m not referring to typical college-student messiness—we have a current college student at another university, so we are very familiar with college lifestyle). We were surprised about the condition of the dorm considering the price of tuition, and left the tour wondering if the academic buildings and classrooms were equally dated and worn? We are OOS and also wondered if DU is primarily a commuter school and perhaps that is the explanation for little activity on campus and the condition of the dorm? She really loves the programs they offer, the literature she’s read about the school, the study abroad approach, etc., so I’m wondering if we need to take another trip to see it again? Would love to hear any feedback—maybe our tour and experience was atypical?

@G&HMom - what dorm did you tour? We toured the one in the middle of campus - can’t remember the name right now. It is older but didn’t seem dirty. Did you tour the freshmen dorms? But agree dorms and food need improvement for the price of tuition (even with merit).
We saw a classroom in the business school - very nice but I don’t think it was typical. Athletic facility beautiful.
We do like the school, just struggling with price/value (and strength of the major he wants).

@“G&HMom”

It sounds to me like your tour was atypical. I have a current freshman son at DU. He is in the Towers building and while they are older facilities, they are very clean. We have visited him several times since moving in and have been impressed with the cleanliness of the common areas and bathrooms. In fact, most friends and family are very impressed with the building and set up of the rooms compared to other schools they’ve seen. DU is currently building a brand new freshman dorm although I’m not sure if it will open for the incoming freshman class.

When we toured in Feb 2018 we were there on a Friday and the campus seemed fairly quiet. My son was worried that there wasn’t enough action for him. Because it was a top choice we returned the following Monday (after touring other CO campuses he was interested in) and found the campus to be anything but quiet. There were kids walking around everywhere - riding bikes, skateboards, scooters, etc. We did our own exploring and went through several of the academic buildings, opened classroom doors, met with an advisor for his desired major, ate at one of the schools cafeterias, etc. This solidified his decision to attend DU and he has no regrets. It’s definitely not a commuter school - I believe around 70% of the students are from out of state. Many of the academic buildings are new. I would suggest another visit and plan on spending several hours exploring on your own. We stopped and talked to numerous students and asked 1000 questions. This helped him feel comfortable about the school because the kids were very candid and they all loved it there. I know they even have the option for prospective students to sit in on classes so that might be a good idea. Let me know if you have any other questions. College Confidential was invaluable to us during this process last year so I’m happy to help. The DU forum is pretty quiet but don’t let that fool you - It’s a fantastic school!

Also, consider joining the DU parents Facebook page even if your daughter hasn’t made her decision yet - You’ll see its an amazing community of people that are willing to help in any way.

Just a question. I keep getting emails from DU financial aid. I presume these are being sent to all applicants
and we haven’t received a decision yet, but these emails read as though they are written to someone who has been accepted. They keep referring to her DU financial awards as if they have already been determined and sent

Again, I’m assuming this is just a strange way of sending emails out to all candidates worded as if they are already accepted even though they aren’t. Either that or she has already been accepted and we just don’t know it yet (portal says application still to be reviewed).

Here’s an example if you are curious:

“Now that you’ve calculated the unmet cost of attending the University of Denver, it’s time to formulate a plan to manage that cost. Even though (her name here)’s award letter will include all of the institutional, federal and state financial aid we can offer, there are further options available to help you and your family fund this important investment.”

I’m guessing these are just grammatical mistakes in tense (we couldn’t have already calculated unmet cost unless we knew we had an offer letter in hand).

@HankCT

I would definitely shoot an email to the admissions office. It sounds like your daughter was accepted and info was sent but you didn’t receive it. They are very responsive to emails so I would give that a shot. Good luck!

Visited DU this weekend with my daughter who was accepted EA. She had a horrible overnight experience in a Thursday night. Her host left her to go to a “meeting that she couldn’t bring her to” from 9 pm - 2 am. She never met any students at dinner or breakfast. After breakfast the host said “bye” and told her she could bring her stuff to admissions and then go to class. This was a dorm RA that was her host! She attended a class that had nothing to with her major but was at least enjoyable. The admissions person I dealt with the next morning (Friday) told us she was going to call us on Saturday so my daughter could meet some students before the school’s hockey game that night that we had tickets to. We then found lunch on our own bc admissions didn’t give us any recommendations and went on a campus tour that really only showed us 5 buildings and never pointed out the others that we were passing or asked if the several accepted students wanted to see anything specific. We met two families in the tour with accepted students who told us admissions screwed up their class visits and so they never got to attend a class after flying out to visit. We were checking our phones all day. Never received a call just a text from a student around 2 pm asking if she wanted to meet to chat about her major. We wanted thousands of dollars on the trip as did other families. The LEP counselor we met with was wonderful and my daughter has a great time at the hockey game and wants to do another overnight so she can really see what things are like socially. I’m incredibly disappointed in their admissions team. For a staff where many also have comnunications as part of their titles they were anything but communicative. Even when we reached out late Saturday afternoon via email since we couldn’t get anyone on the phone they emailed but never called to apologize ir see if they could do anything.

@pinkhat Pinkhat, sorry you and your daughter went through all of that. That doesn’t sound too great. It sounds like you have a somewhat open mind about it, because we all know it’s not realistic or fair to judge an entire institution by a single person (especially a student, who may just be checking a box). This works both ways. For example, at one college tour (not Denver), we had an AMAZING tour guide, who also happened to be in the major my DD is looking at. I had to couch my DD’s enthusiasm after, because for the same reason, you can’t base your decision on a single individual, terrible or great. The real pain here is the cost, of course.

If DU is top on your list and you did not receive merit, I suggest asking your regional recruiting rep what it would take scorewise on ACT or SAT to get a merit and when the last possible test retake date would be to receive the merit. It could be well worth the extra study time and test sitting time!!!

@G&HMom DU is def not a commuter school. Only 25% are from Colorado. At the convocation at the beginning of this school year (my son is a freshman), the chancellor said the next highest population was 1) California 2) Texas 3) Illinois 4) Minnesota and 5) Massachusetts so most kids stay on campus on weekends. Sorry about the bad visit. Not sure whether that is typical. We saw some classrooms in the business school, and toured JMAC dorm, library, Nelson dining hall, student center, science center and the athletic center. Dorms were a bit 70’s ish but were pretty clean when we saw them. The accepted student day and overnight (1st visit) sealed the deal for my son.

ED2 Announced for all those interested.

Finally got a decision. DD was accepted, and awarded a 12K scholarship in addition to 3K toward tuition, if she stays on campus. So this totals 15K. Considering U Denver is one of the most expensive schools in the country, the 15K does not go nearly as far as it does at other schools. This puts the net cost at 48K or so, which makes it one of the most expensive options we have on the table.
