EA vs. ED

I've been wondering about what schools to apply EA and ED.

If I were to apply ED, it'd be Columbia.

On the other hand, if I were to apply EA, I'd consider MIT and BC.

Does anybody know if I am allowed to apply to both MIT and BC on a EA basis?
Am I only allowed to apply to ONE EA?

Also, am I allowed to apply to Columbia (ED), MIT (EA), and/or BC (EA)?
(I know I must pull out all applications if I got accepted through ED, but could I still apply to both EA and ED simultaneously?)

If I were to get accepted to Columbia, I would obviously attend the school, but if I were to get deferred/rejected (and got accepted into BC), I would have a school to attend...

Of course, I'll be sending my applications to several more schools if I did not get into Columbia, but I was hoping to make a few 'wise' decisions so that I could end up with a school or two by the end of December.

Thanks in advance!

I'm almost positive that you can apply ED to Columbia and EA to the other two as long as you withdraw your applications to BC and MIT if you're accepted to Columbia. If you were applying to Yale or another school with SCEA you could only apply to that school early (ED or EA).

Yes, you're allowed to apply to both MIT and BC on a EA basis. EA that only allows you to apply to one school is called SCEA (single choice early action) and is only offered by Stanford and Yale (i believe).
I'm not very sure as to whether or not you can apply to all 3 schools at once, but logically, you should be able to. You just can't apply to 2 ED's at the same time.

fhg is right. as long as BC and MIT don't have SCEA you can apply to all three. Just a thought, though...if your transcript is truly good enough to give you a shot at MIT, you should think about waiting on the Columbia ED, because you'd have an excellent shot at a big scholarship to BC.

No, BC has specific rules.

You can apply to Columbia ED and MIT EA, no problem. You can also apply to MIT EA and BC EA, no problem. BUT, you cannot apply to Columbia (or anywhere else) ED and BC EA. BC (and Georgetown) do not allow an EA application if you've applied anywhere ED, but you can apply EA to as many schools as you like.

It is very important to read the restrictions for each individual school you are applying to. General answers don't work in these situations.

Wow, thanks for the specific response. I'll be sure to read all those restrictions. Thank you!
