Okay so, I am applying to: Brown, CMU, Harvey Mudd, Pomona, Rice, Stanford, Tufts, U of Rochester, and Yale.
1) so which of these schools have EA programs
2) I know that Yale has a single-choice EA program. So if you apply there when do you find out if you got in? Rice has an 'interim decision' plan as well as ED, so could I apply 'interim' at Rice as well as EA at Yale?
3) Is it more advantageous to apply early to a dream school that is a huge reach (yale) or somewhere you have a better chance even though it's not your 1st choice?

EA- first choice (must attend if admitted early)
ED- second choice (may attend if admitted early)
RD- everything else (may attend if admitted)

i believe that is how many EA/ED programs work... i might be wrong though.

rocketDA, i think you switched EA and ED.

ED is binding (hence, Early DECISION), EA is not (Early Action).

I would say that if you really like Yale and would go there above all else if admitted, you should apply there early. There's a very big difference between the SCEA and RD acceptance rate at Yale. (Something like 13% SCEA versus 5% RD).

Stanford is also SCEA.

2) I know that Yale has a single-choice EA program. So if you apply there when do you find out if you got in?

Dec. 15

Rice has an 'interim decision' plan as well as ED, so could I apply 'interim' at Rice as well as EA at Yale?

probably not. I think the only thing you can do along with SCEA is rolling admissions.

3) Is it more advantageous to apply early to a dream school that is a huge reach (yale) or somewhere you have a better chance even though it's not your 1st choice?

depends. do you want to maximize your chance at yale or just want to be sure that you got in somewhere in december?

well, I know that Yale says they do EA so that people can still apply RD in case they dont get in Yale EA... so do you know if you'll get into Yale before applying RD to places? How do ED/RD kids deal with this - this confuses me...

Okay, so you find out about Yale and most EA/ED decisions sometime around Dec. 15th. I ran into some difficulty when I applied because we found out about Yale on the 16th, but the Stanford app. was due on the 15th (earlier than most schools). My hs treats all early acceptances as binding, so I had to withdraw the Stanford app. and lose some $.

But...most schools have a Jan. 1st deadline for RD, so that gives you about two weeks to get your act together if you don't get in. Given that possibility, it would probably be good to have at least rough essays put together that you could polish up if things don't go well. So, in conclusion, for Yale, at least, you'll know if you got in before the majority of schools have their RD deadlines.

Even with an SCEA or ED application, you can go ahead and apply to schools RD, whether their deadlines are rolling or fixed. If you are accepted ED, you will have to withdraw those applications and lose the application fee. For ID/EDII schools, prepare the application and send it at the last minute even if you haven't heard from your ED school.

Information on Yale wasn't that easy to find, but it is pretty clear:
