EA2 Decisions

Gratz wpirpi! :D Can't wait for my WPI decision... x_x

Not to be nosy or anything, but how much did you get? I'm pretty much waiting on FA decision at this point, not admission. :p

15,000/yr x4

Technically it's Wooster but everyone at WPI calls it Wusster. It sounds a lot better.

dorkdorkdork
did u apply ea 2? have you recieved a decision?
am still waiting for mine. they misplaced a rec- tho the app status shows everything is there!

I applied RD and no decision yet but they do have everything on file.

Waiting is hard. :( GL on your rec getting found!

My son is a junior at WPI. Here is something for you all to think about if you are considering WPI vs other schools. They are GREAT at getting their grads jobs. My S already has his THIRD internship lined up for this upcoming summer. Two of his friends who interned with him last summer at Cysco Computer Systems (one of the best companies in the US to work for) and were seniors this year were offered jobs for after graduation in SEPTEMBER! They have both accepted and will start at 74K after graduation in this poor economy. WPI is supposed to be the 9th best institution in the country with RPI not far behind at 14th at getting their grads jobs that make money. After paying thousands for an education getting a job is important - it is really important if the kids are going to have significant debt. My S is very happy with his WPI education so far and loves it there.

thanks dorkdorkdork!!

JESSEPHEN-
Thank you, I will show that information to my parents. After the final financial things come in with federal whatever, we have to figure things out. My parents will help as much as they can, but they don't want me to ring up too much in student loans and graduate owing a mortgage and not being able to find a job. The point about summer internships is a helpful argument. Is your son's internships near WPI or his home or neither? paid?

Jessephen.

Thank you for the information., it is very useful.

Can I ask what is your son majoring in and what are his two friends majoring in?

One thing that I'd advise you to do that I did NOT do when selecting a college is to look at their undergraduate and graduate course catalogs. And for WPI, you might want to give Clark and Holy Cross's catalogs a peek too (because you can cross register). Also you should look at how many faculty they have for your given major and if they offer the sorts of classes that you'd like to take. It also might be worth asking what sorts of research they do, and figure out if its what you're interested in.

Fortunately, WPI turned out to have a great electrical engineering program. They offer a wide selection of courses, have a lot of faculty, and dedicate an entire building to electrical engineering (Atwater Kent).

And while I would give some amount of weight to the overall US News rankings, because they have a formula, I wouldn't look at the major specific rankings at all. Because they probably reflect little more than the size and SES of the school's student bodies (I'm quite serious, I bet if you plotted those two variables it would give you almost the exact rankings).

--

Now, here's the sales pitch (coming from a current WPI student). WPI strikes a good balance between research and teaching. You'll get professors who know you, but also professors who are doing interesting research. So if you're looking for a school that has more teaching then a big state school (with huge lecture halls) and more research and facilities than a small liberal arts college, then WPI might be right for you.

My son's major is Electrical and Computer Engineering with a minor in Computer Science. The two with the jobs at Cisco are Computer Science majors. The Cisco internship is more in the CS field (his minor) but he really liked working at the company. These have all been paid internships also which is amazing in this economy.
The additional bonus al6200 didn't mention above is that the Atwater Kent building is accessible 24/7 for ECE majors. My son lives there sometimes or at least spends more time there than at his apartment because it is very good for studying. I believe the CS building is accessible 24/7 for those majors too.

WPIRPI: The internship was in Boxboro, MA at Cisco systems. It is about 30" from Worcester and 70" from home. He stayed in Worcester for the 12 weeks of internship as it was a shorter commute but came home every weekend (mostly to see the girlfriend who lives near here!). He doesn't travel home much during the school year because of studying. Yes the internships were all paid (> $20/hr last summer and upcoming summer) so he earned a significant chunk of $$$. Obviously he worked hard to get these opportunities but in general the school does a great job with getting grads jobs. Another student who is a brother of my D's friend just graduated WPI with a mechanical engineering major last May and had 5 job offers at graduation time. Of course the economy was better last May than it is now. I think the additional $$$ we have had to dish out have been worth it for the great education and the opportunities my son has gotten. There were some interns from other schools at Cisco but they came to WPI specifically recruiting for interns last year and hired several WPI students (maybe 20?).
Of course my son has been very happy there but my D would die before she'd go to the same school - but engineering is not her thing. Ironically she has applied to RPI because of the architecture program. Most of her other schools have bee LACs.

Thank you very much for the info.~Jessephen~ :)

It seems like ECE and CS majors are the best at WPI~ but does anybody know anything about other majors? like bio engineering or chem engineering? I've heard that there is a bio research center at Worcester~ will this make the bio e program at WPI better?~ i think about going up there..... as a chem or bio engi major~~ but i've been also accepted to U minnesota (its usnews rank for chem e is like top3)~ i prefer WPI because it's small~ but i don't know if they have good chem or bio E program.......

I know that Bio is pretty good, and there is indeed a research center called Gateway park.

So, something to really check out when you go to the accepted students program next week, right?

I only see accepted students programs for April 15 and 22. Is there one next week, besides their usual daily tours, etc., that we didn't see anywhere on the site or in their admissions info?

There's one February 15. S received a postcard a few weeks ago.

Got decision, but no letter yet on merit money. Has everyone who got in on EA2 already got their letters? And was it a little? Lot? none? Or do they send out "none" letters.. lol?

No $ letter here either. Hoping!.....
Thanks for the 2/15 info, CBBBlinker- s doesn't recall seeing that, but will call admissions.

Tymom - It seems to me that some applicants get their letter separately and some with the decision. Four years ago, S got his separately but D got her merit letter with her acceptance letter. Letter came mid-January which was a surprise. D got presidential $22,000/year. We will not qualify for any FA.
