Smoda61.. she must have been a shoe in if she got her letter early with the Pres. award! Good for her! Hoping for some decent merit, and this will be the first year with 2 in college, so will have to see how the FA plays out. So it sounds like merit might come out first, and then later they will come back with the full picture if you've applied for FA? All confusing, as with D, it was very cut and dry with our state university compared to this!

Tymom - D did present a strong application. We would have been surprised if she were not accepted. The next few months will be interesting and the final decision on where to go will be difficult. D applied to 10 schools. Each with reasons why the school would be a good match for her and every school with some degree of flaw.

For S it was all more straight forward. Male with interest in CS & engineering. It all goes together. For D, she is interested in Biology/Psychology/Biological Engineering/Biotechnology but all her ECs are in the arts - dance and music. It's a little harder match to make.

As a side note, D likes WPI very much and is thrilled with the scholarship offer. Now the wait to see what other options will be available to her.

wow, gz on the acceptance for ur DD, smoda~
as an acceptee myself, whos waiting for the FA to come in, may i ask what were ur D's stats? so i can estimate what i'll be lookign at ? also, what was ur EFC?

-Thanks~

Here are the basics. I am running out the door and filling out the rest would take to much time this morning. If you need more, let me know.

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 710 M, 680 R, 690 W
SAT II: Bio-780, Chem-720, Math II-790, Math I-740
ACT: 35
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
Weighted GPA: 6.26/8.0 (Highest possible weighted to date)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/184
AP (place score in parenthesis): Bio (5), Chem (4) – only two allowed junior year
Senior Year Course Load: AP Physics, AP Calculus, AP English, AP Spanish, Honors Statistics, Honors Civics & Government, Biotechnology, Psychology, Concert/Marching Band, Stage Band
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None but some very selective awards within my high school

Her award was all merit. We do not qualify for FA ever. So we do not fill out those forms and I do not know the EFC.

Sorry for no help in that area.

REN- With mine, it was just a letter on merit scholarship. I applied for FA, but that is yet to come to see if I get any need based grants or loans. It sounds like some people get their acceptance back, some get acceptance and merit, and others get acceptance/merit/and FA back all at the same time.. but researching back on these boards, it really varies. Ren, are you male or female? What are your stats?

SMODA- Being #1 (or 2) or in her class automatically gives her $17,000 year, right? I'm #4 in my class, but probably could have been #1 or 2 if I had focused a bit more my freshman year- but too late for that now. I'm really big into the FIRST team at my school, and WPI is a huge sponsor of that, so I think that helped with the merit I got and hoping I land one of the FIRST scholarships later this year.

Wpirpi - The WPI site does state that #1 & #2 are guaranteed $17,000 so we knew that would happen if she was accepted. The $22,000 was a nice surprise. You state that your association w/ FIRST was a factor in your merit. What did you receive?

I don't know for sure if FIRST had anything to do with my merit, just a guess based on what our FIRST mentor told us as well as the feedback I got during my interview. My SATs weren't great despite my high GPA, our school doesnt offer a whole lot in AP classes (I only took two APs), but I do have loads of EC and volunteer work. It is for $15k/year. Not as much as your daughter, but better than nothing! (And I've read that girls have a tendency to get more merit than us guys, but not wanting to sound negative, so I'll just say I'm glad they are trying to up the female population! haha)

$15 K is wonderful and you still have FA coming to you. I am sure that being a female is a benefit when it comes to merit as well as acceptance. D certainly got more merit offered than her brother did 4 years ago. He had strong GPA, scores, eagle scout w/ gold palm, extensive/unusual work experience, etc, etc and was offered $12,500 at the time.

wpirpi,
i have about 3.9 UW, and 4.0W GPA
2070 SAT-750 M, 630 CR, 690 W
SAT2s: Math2 800, Chinese 770
APs: AP calc AB (5), US history(1 lol)
i also have 0 EFC-- very poor student >.<

any predictions on merit scholarhsips? how about FA?

If I had any knowledge or understanding, I would share. My only experiences are D's and S's. I do wish you luck on merit and FA that can work for you.

i havent received my letter or any information about ea2 from them....

I had to resend my grades because my school didnt finish first semester before february... so they said that i could send first quarter grades and i would have gotten the letter last week.... still nothing...

I'm surprised that your school had not already sent the first semester grades. D's high school automatically sends those grades with the transcript, councilor rec, etc. They send mid year grades also after mid term exams.

I'm sure that WPI will be in touch with you as soon as they can finish their assessment.

Good luck.

it's almost two weeks after the admission e-mail.
can't sleep to hear about the money stuff.

Just as an update, I got my admission letter 2 weeks ago (no mention of scholarship). One week ago, I got a scholarship letter. Then yesterday I got my final financial package including need based aid (which only was loans, no grants, scholarships or work study). So, I have the bottom line on this school. I have two more to wait for before deciding.

is int'l student eligible for loans?

I am no expert on financial aid, but mine were federal loans (government).
Just found this:
International students are not eligible for the US government aid programs (Pell Grant, SEOG Grant, Stafford Loan, Perkins Loan, PLUS Loan, and Federal Work-Study). However, many schools will ask international students to submit a FAFSA so that they may use the data for assessing financial need

Got my acceptance letter today, woo!

Just one question though, anyone else get a late decision? I'm not complaining, I definitely dig their choice, but I'm just kinda curious why they made my decision late, my letter was dated February 10th (I don't mean the post mark but the actual letter head).

Son is still waiting on a decision - they wanted to get an update on a grade. Hope to hear soon.

Carbonette
Maybe they were missing a piece of info or needed to contact your guidance counselor or something. You applied EA2?
Or maybe an applicant they accepted this round canceled his application and you were "next" up.
Either way, congrats!
