D got a letter today dated 12/16 from Wash U offering her acceptance for the class of 2013. She applied regular decision though! I was not aware that they offer admissions periodically like this, but she is very happy and relieved!
What a great way to start her Christmas holiday!

Umm, no. They don't. There must be some mistake. Are you certain she didn't apply early decision?

hope4freeride: last year, my D was asked for some immediate info from Emory b4 the EDI deadline.....it was mentioned in the email that she had 24 hours to provide it if she still wanted to be considered for ED....she never applied EDI; she had applied RD...we were glad we caught the error, but then she was waitlisted RD.....makes you wonder....

If Wash U is your daughter's 1st choice, count your blessings and send the deposit...if not, you should let them know, ASAP....I have a feeling they think she is coming!!

Ummm, yes!
At no time did she apply ED. She applied SCEA to another school so it would have been impossible for her to apply ED anywhere else. I certainly did not sign an ED form which is required for parents, the college counselor and the student.
Her letter says:
"Congratulations! We are delighted to offer you an early announcement of your admission to the College of Arts and Sciences at Washington University. As we select students for our freshman class, we periodically select a small number who are offered early notification of admission.
You early offer of admission is non-binding. You will have until May 1, 2009 to respond."

This is definitely NOT an ED acceptance letter.

can you post her stats?

this could be another form of likely letters offered to overqualified/extremely strong applicants

Interesting. I'm not aware that they've ever done that in previous years. Also, it doesn't sound like a "likely letter" because those typically say that they are an early indication that you will be admitted if you keep your stats up -- not that you HAVE been granted admission. I guess congratulations are in order!

ooooo cool! I would like to see some stats, too!!

There was another student from her school who also got this type of admission last year. Her stats are within other ED admit postings, but perhaps not quite as high as some of them. What really helped her, I firmly believe, is that she lucked up by having a great interview in August and the person just happened to be pretty high up the chain in the admissions office. He told her that he would be personally reviewing her application file since he interviewed her as well as the regional representative for our area.
She does not have a likely letter. It is a firm admit letter, with the housing form and acceptance form sent with it.
So, I do agree with other postings that showing interest and having a good interview really does make a difference.

hm, well congrats to her! That's interesting, I never knew that this kind of thing ever happened.

Thank you all. I didn't know they offered this kind of admission either and she is very grateful to have such unexpectedly wonderful news.
She was rejected from her SCEA school so of course the anxiety set in that no one else would want her either. The letter could not have come at a better time-right after she finished her mid term exams.

OP- This probably means she is in line for scholarship money. I expect you are in for more good news in the mail shortly. A friends daughter received the early notification of acceptance from Wash U and then received an offer of about a 1/3 scholarship. Congrats!
Wash U can accept early anyone they would like. Wash U uses this to try to keep the top students before they get lured by other acceptances. It is not bound by the notification rules of the ivies, which skirt the rules with likely letters.

To curious77,
I was under the impression that in order to receive scholarships, that you must apply for them first. They do have quite a few different ones and the "catalogue" of possibilities was the largest I have seen.
She was nominated by her school to compete for a Danforth scholarship but it is incredibly competitive so I have encouraged her to submit applications to the others that are applicable for her.
If they award other scholarship money that is separate and distinct from those in the brochure, that is exciting news indeed. I really hope you are right!

Congratulations! That really does sound like great news, I'm glad your daughter has that amazing opportunity!

hope4freeride: Funny, I just realized what your screen name is. I am not sure of the details regarding my friend's daughter's scholarship. This was 2 years ago, but I would guess that she had applied for the WUSTL scholarships also if that is necessary at that school. Neither of my kids applied there so I do not know. What I do know that it is a common practice of colleges to give early writes to the scholarship kids and that my friend's daughter's early acceptance letter was followed shortly by the scholarship offer. It may have come in January. I really think you can expect some merit money and perhaps it will fulfill your hope for a free ride. :) I hope I am correct.
Again congratulations. I am envious as my S is still completing applications, although he has one acceptance in the bank.

Thanks for your kind words, curious77, and for giving me more information. The WUSTL scholarship apps are not due until January 15 so if your friend's daughter got a merit scholarship in January than I guess they do give additional money to dole out. Time will tell!
We do not qualify for need based aid and indicated that on her application, so any merit aid will be greatly appreciated. I wonder if that helped with her admission?!

My daughter also received early admission at WUSTL this week.
She applied regular decision....the letter came out of the blue. Nice Christmas present.

Congratulations to your daughter as well, welcome to CC, and Merry Christmas!

My son applied RD and got his acceptance letter a little early...first week of March...so maybe on occasion they do let you know early.
