Early acceptance notification date?

Is it possible they will be released before January 21st? It says "by" on the website, so I was wondering how punctual they are with this type of thing.

Also, I submitted my application back in September. Is it possible they already have a decision for my application? (Obviously it'll be released when everyone else's is)

This is different from my original question awhile ago. It just seems absurd that they wouldn't start reading ANY applications until November 1st, especially considering how many people apply.

Admission staff do a lot of travelling in the Fall. They are not in the office just waiting for apps to arrive in the mail. Take a deep breath and relax. This is not rolling admissions. Best of luck to you!

As someone said on another thread, don’t expext too much from admissions. They do things on their own schedule and they don’t hesitate to change that schedule as they go along. They just recently logged in my last year’s AP scores and I already go here.

I know it’s hard to wait but try to be patient!

I guess I’m just overtly anxious. I’ll try not to think about it, but people bring up college plans everyday so it’s hard not to think/wonder about it at all.

When my son applied, class of 2012, he had his decision on-line at around 5 pm on the first Friday after New Years.

We got a likely letter on Dec 24, and official notification 2 weeks later. This was for an OOS applicant in 2008.

@proxygc, you got a likely letter? o.O how commonly are those sent out? thanks!

I don’t know how often likely letters are sent; and this was for a non-URM, non athlete, but very strong academic applicant. Maybe UNC wants to encourage visits over winter break?

BYW in the end UNC offered no merit but the NM scholarship, and very strangely, no Honors Program admission, so this applicant attended a top private LAC that offered a full tuition merit award. So again, the likely letter was nice to receive, but not a great indication of other academic perks to come.

if you turned in all your materials early, you should be hearing from them in mid December. For those that are still waiting on reqs and things…I think after Jan suits you a more concise timeframe.:P

Are you sure? Would it be updated online? I heard some people found out early last year

I believe everyone who applied early learned the definitive news at the same time–12:00 midnight January 31 east coast time–by going online, though actually many people couldn’t access the news til hours later because the system overloaded. I believe some applicants had good reason to expect positive news because a very small number of them had received likely letters in late December (?) and others had been invited to some special visit days in January (?) that signaled positive intent Don’t take this or the dates as fact though; it’s just what I recall. My son was accepted but wasn’t shown any love until 9:00 p.m on January 30th (we’re on west coast!)

My best advice is to be as patient as humanly possible. At least they aren’t using the new system for the first time like last year, though.

SMBsmom has it exactly right. Answers were online at midnight, everyone at the same time and then the computers crashed, further delaying the results by several hours. Hopefully connectcarolina will work correctly this year, but it is still slow at times even now, like during registration.

Wow, that must have been so exciting lol, just waiting for decisions Jan 30th. One of my friends found out about her decision late December…I think she might have turned her’s in very quickly after august 1st opening, so everything was ready for checking. However, I think these might have been some rare cases…so I would go with the late January answer :frowning: :frowning: More apprehension ahead of us!

I submitted mine September 1st. My teacher rec letter was uploaded probably around the 5th, and I also mailed the counselor sheet and transcript on the 1st. I don’t know how anyone could submit the application in the beginning of August, as school usually starts August 25th, at least in NC. Regardless, you’re right, this process is painstakingly horrible. The anticipation alone is enough to drive me insane, as I’m ready to know where I’m going so I can start planning.

Last year they made us wait an extra day for decisions! So they could make you wait even longer than you’re initially promised! It was awful because I was looking forward to finding out Friday night (Saturday morning), and I actually found out at about 4am on Sunday. Anyway, the likely letters are really a very very small minority of the applicants, so I wouldn’t count on it unless you’re an outstanding applicant.

I second an earlier post about the likely letters. My daughter received one last year (OOS, not a legacy, URM, or athlete), so we were hoping that was a good sign for acceptance into the honors program or an invitation to scholarship day. Although she was accepted into the freshman class, she did not get selected for UNC’s honors program, and the only aid she was offered was a small scholarship (I think it was 3K?) for designating UNC as her first choice for a National Merit scholarship. She’s a happy freshman at Notre Dame, and my youngest is waiting on a decision from UNC this year. We would still love to see a likely letter, because I assume the letters usually translate into offers of admission. Good luck to all who are waiting!

No likely letters. A comment on the admission blog said:

Hi Anonymous,

We have decided not to send out “likely” letters this year, as they tend to be confusing for students. We found that often students and their parents did not know how to interpret the letters, and we want to avoid that confusion this year. We also find it difficult to single out particular students for such communications, as we receive so many strong applications. Thanks for the question.

Julie

She appears to work in the admissions office. That was from a few days ago.

We found the lack of merit/honors offers fom UNC very surprising too. Similar to what other posters experienced, where higher ranking U’s offered prestigious and large merit awards, UNC only offered only their NM. The lack of an honors program offer was inexplicable for a kid who had stellar credentials in every way.

That’s too bad about the likelies this year. We had no confusion as to their meaning last time around, and it was a nice Christmas present.

Not getting an honors invite did sting, but the likely letter was one of my favorite Christmas presents ever.
