Early Acceptance!!

i just got home today and got an early acceptance in the mail today!! grinnell's not my first choice, but it's still nice to know that i have options. i got a $12k/year merit scholarship. not sure if thats too good, but atleast its money :) !!!! yay! im happy.
they also sent in a piece of paper about the "fly-in program" for admitted students, so students of "color and first generation college students" can fly in for free. but im only half asian, the other half, i'm white. are they still going to give me a free trip considering im not very "minority"-ish?

anyone else get their early acceptance?

i just got that today too... 12k every year.... i know that grinnell gives pretty good money for lower ? mid? class... i wonder how many kids actually get this merit scholarship...

o yea. and the fact that you're half asian... whatever man, round up... i think you'd be fine for that trip.

Yup, I am half-asian and they flew me in. It's all good.

And congratulations!!

Yeah I just got in today, it was a nice balance to my scholarship rejection letter that I also received from WashU.

$15,000 a year merit aid. I'm pretty pleased with that.

Congratulations to those getting admissions and merit aid! What are your stats and ECs? What attracted you to Grinnell?
My son is thinking about applying next year, but it is too far away for him to visit easily, so we're relying on comments from students like you.

Where else are you considering going?

I was a 1460 SAT, 33 ACT

GPA was A's and B's. I always took most challenging classes available, 12 APs total or something (one was independent study that I got a 5 on).

I have a strong portfolio and I got a rec from a painting professor who is also an alumnus from Grinnell.

Dedicated extracurriculars including national and statewide recognition for junior classical league competition. I was also art club 4 years chess club 4 years latin club 4 years tennis 3 years, etc.

What attracted me to Grinnell was the strong strong liberal arts combined with a very strong art program and great facilities. What does not attract me is the isolation, though I hear it isn't as bad as you'd think.

I also applied to:
Wash U St. Louis
NYU
Macalester
Maryland Institute College of Art
SUNY Purchase
Skidmore

I haev not visited Grinnell yet, I did the NY tour instead to hit my other schools and I visited WashU my Junior year.

Thanks northstar, It made my day at least.

Northstarmom: is your S a minority? If so, I recommend applying for GDLP - Grinnell Diversity Leaders Program. They fly in URMs (including asians!) and first-generation college students for a weekend. It's a good time, and plus, it's in November, so if you apply for it and are accepted, you can kind of count on being accepted into the school, since they say they don't fly kids out who are going to fall in love with the place and aren't going to get in.

Yeah, 15,000 a year merit scholarship. Coupled with a sticker price $10,000 lower than many schools, means only $18,000 a year.

Now, I just have to make sure that they get my national merit choice.

1490SAT
3.8uw, top 4%
no ECs longer than 2 years except for track. and environmental club which i forgot to include on all of my apps (oops, i guess that shows how dedicated i was to that club).
i guess that was only good for 12K :( really wish i had 15k instead. oh well, it probably wont make a difference in the end. so, also, if my family EFC is something like 7k does that mean my family doesnt have to pay anything? and the 5K remaining goes towards paying the loans that the school calculates as part of my aid package?

I got Ins and Outs today. Is that a hint? hopeful

Odd time to send admissions propaganda anyhow...

I think they just send that to everyone on the mailing list. It is fun to read though!

I applied to grinnell as an international student. They're sending acceptance so fast? :( Guess I got rejected :x

doesnt mean you got rejected, this was just an early acceptance notice, i think most people are still finding out april 1st

My daughter received her early acceptance today too. She is excited about going out to visit in April. She received the $12,000, which is very generous. We enjoyed the Ins and Outs. I thought it was neat that they included very candid articles.

Huzzah. Got the acceptance in the mail yesterday. At least it takes the pressure off to know that I'm in somewhere, and into a good LAC at that. I guess I'll be seeing you guys in April when they do the fly in programs? Cool stuff.

I realize I'm a bit late here, but I also received an early acceptance earlier this week, and couldn't be more thrilled- I doubt I'll end up going though... it's too far from me, and I've been hearing some good things from other schools that are closer to home and appeal to me more. But who knows what will happen come May!!!! :-)

Is it just me or do they take a really long time replying emails? I asked them a question like a month ago and still no answer even after 3 emails. All I wanted to know was the date you would be assigned an email account from the college. All they said on their website was you'll be assigned one when one 'matriculates'. Didn't really get a specific time frame.

My son is a freshman at Grinnell and I think one of the things I have felt about the school is that it does have a "relaxed" approach to many things. For example, he didn't hear about housing for a long, long time. I think the reality is that it is a "less tense" place, works at a slightly different pace, than other schools might-- in regards to these administrative sorts of things. Overall, I think it is fine-- it is a very student oriented place, don't worry about that-- just not on edge. If this is a question you must have an answer to, then contact the IT department at the school directly, perhaps, or give them a call...

My son got his email address on his first day at school, by the way...

Thanks for the reply. I just wanted to know because you get cheaper air fares if you can prove you are college student. All they want is your email address of your school.

kwon234ioud,
Congrats on being fiscally responsible. I am sure the admissions office would help with that...they are probably busy this week. Just FYI my son's email address is: hislastnamethefirsttwolettersofhisfirstname@grinnell.edu

Of course, neither his first or last name are all that common, so this would be modified if you had common names..
