I know that I have heard quite a few things about applying EA to Elon for MT, but I am still a little confused about how it works. If I plan on auditioning on an early date, (October) and if I apply EA, does that mean that I will know my acceptance status by December? Also, does applying EA ONLY mean academic acceptance early, or if you audition on an earlier date and apply EA, is your acceptance both artistic and academic. Does what I am asking make sense? Any input on applying Early Action would be MUCH appreciated! Thanks so much

D applied in September and auditioned Nov 5 through their early action program. She was admitted both artistically and academically by December 18. Elon has a fantastic program and a whirlwind of a program director, Catherine McNeela. It would be an amazing opportunity to attend Elon MT-one of D’s top picks right to the end.

Ditto what abco said. My D applied EA but did not audition until the end of February. She knew she was in academically and it was an academic option for her if she did not get in anywhere for MT. It was her fave academically though. But luckily she did get in to some other great options for MT. You should definitely apply EA. No risk involved.

I did not apply academically before the audition I scheduled in November. Elon was one of the few schools I applied to that you could audtion at without applying academically beforehand. This was nice for me since I had not seen the school and saved me a couple of bucks of application fees. I was denied artistically in December so I did not apply academically.

Congrat’s to all! I have written about this before, but the academic and artistic acceptances are done separately at Elon. The EA application is for academic admission only, and you will know before Christmas whether or not accepted. There is no harm done in going EA. It is not like ED, where you are committed if the school accepts you.

If you audition in the fall for MT, you will get a letter sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas telling you if accepted, rejected, or deferred. All of it is also contingent on academic acceptance. If you are deferred, you will hear from them in spring, when they notify the rest of the MT auditionees.

Because Elon is so selective academically and because each decision is independent, we really welcomed the opportunity to apply EA first. If we hear that D is not accepted academically it will save us a TON of money traveling from CA to NC to audition next February or March! Of course there is always the possibility that she will be deferred or waitlisted academically! YIKES! I hadn’t thought about that before!

D auditioned for Elon MT on 10/28. Had a wonderful time. She has applied Early Action as well. At this point we have to check OnTrack on 12/15 for MT status and then again on 12/20 for Academic status. My question: Does MT talk to admissions before making an offer of acceptance? Do you know of anyone that got into MT, but then not academically?
Thanks!

I auditioned on October 28th as well! I had a really enjoyable time. I believe that we are supposed to check OnTrack on the 16th, though. From what I understand, it is rare that someone would be accepted to the MT program and not the university. I was told that the MT program will “fight” for students that they want. This MAY NOT be correct, but this is what I was told by several students when I auditioned. Hope that helps! :-)

Generally, they are two separate processes. It IS possible to be accepted artistically and not get in academically, it just doesn’t happen often. Keep in mind that Elon MTs are required to take a liberal arts core of regular academic classes, and they need to be able to handle them. My son is a senior and is aware of at least one person in the program who failed out of the school.

For my D, Elon is an academic target/slight reach school. We are trying to decide whether to apply EA or Regular Decision. She plans to audition in February and we would need to fly for the audition. Which is the better choice and why? If there is any influence from the MT department on the academic acceptance if they really want someone, is it better to wait? If they are unsure to accept someone and a student gets deferred academically would it negatively impact the MT admission?
