I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread for those, like my family, who are awaiting word from CMU on our child's early action application (this was an option open to AP/EA students who took classes this past summer; the filing deadline was September 1, 2010).

I anticipate that we will hear from the school within the next week or two, and am curious to know how many other people are in the same boat (and, more importantly, whether they have heard anything).

They say October 1…but last year the decisions dribbled in for 2-3 weeks into October…so don’t panic if you don’t hear on October 1 exactly.

My S didn’t hear until October 10-11 or so–and is was a grueling wait! Apparently the “Where Am I File” database was seriously messed up for a while…causing the delay and which was also the case for lots of confusion for the ED and RD pools. Seriously hope it was upgraded for the 2015 admission cycle.

Best of luck-- anecdotes suggest that nearly everyone from Pre-College 09 who applied EA (not ED) got in-- and some who didn’t get in EA turned around and applied RD to a different school and were subsequently admitted.

If the stats are on target and you Aced the courses in Pre-college, you are probably going to be admitted.

Post Admission Results if you’re comfortable-- that seems to help others relax.

Thanks so much for your post! Every day we tackle the mailman hoping to get our CMU answer. Our child loved the school, so we are anxiously awaiting word.

Quick question (and I understand this goes back a year for you) - when did you receive your applicant receipt letter containing the admission ID needed to track the application? [If anyone has received one for the current application season, please post!]. I assume they send it by regular mail, but we’ve also received e-mail from the admissions office (the last one confirming that we were proceeding under EA).

My family really appreciates your insights; thanks a lot!!!

Believe or not, the large envelope with the applicant ID did NOT arrive until a few days before the decision date. I don’t have the envelope-- but in S’s “CMU paperwork” file, I found the letter and it’s dated September 30! So a few more days later the decision was rendered.

I remember the decision being later than October 1 for S- b/c it was Columbus Day Weekend and he still hadn’t heard. He phoned admissions a few days before and they said his file was incomplete (which it was not) and GC called Tuesday after Columbus Day school holiday and by that time they found all the missing components and were really nice-- adcom person told GC unofficially on the phone he was admitted–he learned while sitting in her office while she made the call. October 1 was a target date. The mail came sometime after that. About 70 or so applicants seemed to be EA admits and the rest of pre-college seemed to do ED or RD.
So don’t worry if October 1 rolls by-- but your D can always ask some of her pre-college friends if they have anything yet…if they do and she doesn’t, call again and ask for the Admission ID and go to this site to see if the file is complete.

As an EA applicant that system will show you as RD. (that’s just the way it goes for financial aid purposes etc…you don’t get your fin aid package until the RD crowd later in March–which is another wait)

Decisions are posted on the WAIP website 3 days after the letter goes in the mail.
DON’T panic when the mail comes and it’s a THIN letter-- the letter you get with the EA and ED decision is a THIN letter! It has a simple congrats letter and a form to return with your deposit (which can be done online too). The fat package of stuff comes with everyone else in the RD pool end of March (even the ED guys in December wait for the fat package).

I’m also applying EA and haven’t gotten an application number yet.

I assume you’re referring to the Sep 6 email asking whether the app was EA or RD. I replied the same day but haven’t received a response yet. Have you?

We just got our admission ID number in today’s mail!!! We checked the “Where am I in the Process” link and CMU has everything. I guess we’ll get their decision anytime now … gulp

Once again, good luck to everyone. We would be curious to know when people are starting to get the admission decisions, so if you would post, that would be great.

@mom2012and14
Love to read your posts. I am a mom of a hopeful 2015 son who is planning to apply ED at CIT for ECE. He also did the AP/EA summer program and aced both courses (one humanities, one CS). All literature from CMU summer program says if CMU is top choice school, apply ED not EA. You have stated that EA has better stats. I am feeling a bit misled. Did we miss the boat by not applying EA? I would think that with CMU locking in students with ED the stats for admission would be better…

There are no published stats on EA-- it’s all anecdotes.
With ED we know that at CMU and all schools, the rates are higher…about 40-50% higher. That’s on internal reports.

I think CMU doesn’t mean to mislead students-- it’s really a self serving statement on their part-- they lock in top students through ED but not so with EA. EA students are treated as RD and have until May 1 to decide. We were surprised that as an EA admit, S didn’t receive his financial / merit package in December with the ED pool and had to wait until late March. That was surprising and frustrating-- b/c reality, had to apply to some other competitors to be ready to bargain. Turns out it worked out fine anyway.

The anecdotal data gathered from FB and CC shows an exceptionally high acceptance rate for EA. But keep in mind it’s a tiny sample 50-70 perhaps all who already demonstrated twice to admissions their abilities-- once to gain acceptance to pre-college (a pre-screen perhaps) and the icing on the cake-- the As in the CMU courses. The references roll over from those applications.
About 300-400 students attend Pre-college. Clearly not everyone gets As in all classes. So applying with Bs is perceived risky perhaps.

As I posted somewhere once before, all but 1 student who applied EA in the 2014 group was accepted EA. More students did apply ED than EA. The one rejected student got Cs in his classes (he enjoyed his freedom way too much that summer)-- applied SCS rejected-- turned around and applied HSS with the intent to transfer – was accepted. Got no money so he headed to another competitive institution.

Don’t loose any sleep over it…if the dates passed, you just have to wait it out now. ECE has tough stats…one approach might also play a safety school – also apply MCS ?? perhaps for physics or math IF your S can demonstrate in the essay or ECs that the interest in ECE has a complimentary interest related to Physics? That gets him into CMU in a round about way if CIT-ECE doesn’t work out.

I see that last year some applicants had “file pulled sent to committee.” We don’t have that listed in our “Where Am I In The Process.” Does anyone have an entry that says something like this?

If the site wasn’t updated from last year, there should be a box at the showing the college(s) applied to-- one on each row…
in that box, it’s three columns wide, and the last column is where the decision will be placed.

It seemed that column had a “filler” at times with that comment-- it was very inconsistent-- some people had it and some did not, and this had NO relationship to the eventual decision. So just ignore it for the moment. There was a minor pattern suggesting around March that this meant some people with this comment had their file moved to a separate financial aid committee …but again, there was no pattern to be inferred from the comments.

Look under the list of “documents received”…if everything is there and the SATs are accurate…don’t worry. If something seems missing- call them ASAP.

End of week, you can call and ask when your decision will be posted-- but it’s still only a few days “late” and a call would be premature.
Don’t worry about calling-- it’s never an Adcom picking up…it’s one of two very nice and helpful receptionists…if you reach Roberta-- you’re golden-- she’s been there forever and will personally put you on hold and physically check your file and reassure you.

Well, although D didn’t apply for EA, but one of her friend from AP/EA got the decision letter this afternoon (10/7). He’s in ! That boy is in NYC. And another girl (north NJ, very close to NYC) is still waiting.
