Early Action, Chance me Michigan Ross

I am currently a Senior at high school and I excel in mathematics and have a large interest in business/finance. I feel like my ACT could be better and that’s my main concern. Essays are a work in progress at the moment. How worried should I be about admissions because again this is my first choice and any pointers on how to buff my chances?

Your ACT is at the 25%ile (based on class of 2023 stats), that is on the low side… especially for an OOS, unhooked candidate that would like to also get into Ross. https://admissions.umich.edu/apply/freshmen-applicants/student-profile

I would send all 3 subject test scores and AP test results of 4s and 5s.

OOS acceptance rate is under 20% so consider UMich admission a reach, you have to first be accepted to UMich to be considered for Ross (reach as well). Pay close attention to the info on the website re: Ross application, essays and portfolio: https://michiganross.umich.edu/undergraduate/bba/admissions

Certainly apply, but make sure to apply to target and highly likely schools as well.

Lastly, make sure UMich is affordable for you/your family by running their net price calculator. https://finaid.umich.edu/estimate-college-costs-with-u-m-net-price-calculator/

Good luck.

Suggestions for senior year? Don’t slack off. There’s a good chance you will be deferred during EA or maybe even waitlisted during RD when April comes rolling around. So, IF and when that happens, your grades need to be solid so that you can write a LOCI with solid grades to show UMich you’re still on top of things.

FWIW, there are roughly 450 slots for freshman Ross students, so while the overall yield rate is 45% to UMich, Ross is likely much higher than 50%. And there’s always a good chance of admission to LSA, but not Ross. So, think about what you would do in that situation.

Oh, UMich doesn’t superscore or use weighted GPA’s. Otherwise, you’re competitive. Good luck!

Would it be worth it to apply regular decision and send in my October ACT? a test I’m going to take anyway. On the website it says October tests will not arrive in time for EA and also preference is given to EA applicants.

Business for undergrad is not a great idea, there is a reason most top schools, including ones with great business schools, don’t offer or recommend business undergrad.

So, roughly 40,000 of the 65,000 apps for the Class of 2022 were submitted EA. We don’t have a breakdown for the Class of 2023. I liked EA, because for about 20% of the students you receive an acceptance before Christmas. For the rest, there’s a wait (some are rejected too) and patience is required.

You’re question is tough, since I think submitting early shows some level of demonstrated interest. But, if you wait and your ACT increases then I can see some value submitting RD.

But let’s say you submit your app EA, get deferred, you can always update your app during the deferred/RD period before the first RD release around 2/1 with your new higher score. I don’t believe you will be rejected during EA, but much of that will depend on your essays and the rest of your app.

Ok thanks for response it helps me a lot to get it figured out. I didn’t even know you could update it.

I should clarify. You don’t update your application, but deferred students send LOCI’s to admissions and you could/would mention any updates like awards, new test scores, updated grades for fall semester senior year, etc.

Ok, but only if deferred right. The Michigan Ross decision in the spring wouldn’t let me update my application unless deferred by LSA?

Whether deferred or accepted by LSA, you may certainly send an update to the AO.

Ross decisions are released roughly on 2/1, 3/1, 4/1 and 4/15, which were also roughly the dates of RD decisions. So, if deferred in EA, your Ross decision will be delayed also. So if deferred or accepted, you would have plenty of time to update the AO with a new ACT score, fall semester senior year grades and/or new awards.

maybe retake ACT - average is 34 in last year’s class it appears…pretty amazing.

plus the admissions portfolio I would imagine is a big deall

just turned in the ross portfolio tonight…fingers crossed…EA for LSA in a couple of weeks ago…guessing I don’t get in…will see

Apply EA, retake your tests if you decide to, send in the scores when they are ready to be sent (if improved of course). You have to be accepted LSA anyway first then Ross. EA shows interests but you got to nail the essay and portfolio. If you can’t get that ready in time, then apply Rd.
