Essays: Should be pretty good because I'll have an extra couple weeks to work on them

I'm in-state, and this is the most logical place I'll end up. What do you guys think, as nothing will change from now to Nov. 10? Thanks.

in…

Chances of admission are good. Chances at “early action” (UIUC does not call what it does “early action”) just depend on what particular department decides to do. Those who apply by priority date in Nov will receive notification in mid-December of either admit, deny, or deferred until all apps are in. Whether you are deferred may depend more on what the particular college and department choose to do than whether you are an ideal candidate. Likely, LAS/chemistry will be admitting signifcant portion of candidates through the priority date process but that is never a certainty. For example, business, in particular, and engineering to a some extent, often choose to hold off on decisions on large numbers of candidates untill all apps are in. Many business apps, who believe they are qualified, and who get a deferral in Dec, go into depression until admitted in Feb because they don’t know that the business college just likes to wait on most of its admission decisions. Likely the Chemistry department will not do that for Chemistry LAS (although it has been done for chemical engineering) but just be aware that if you happen to get a deferral in Dec it may not be anything to be concerned about.

Do essays play a strong part in admissions for non-business/engineering schools, or is it mostly numbers based?

Business probably treats them as more important for all applicants than other colleges. It is a matter of degree for others (and that includes engineering). If you have high class rank/ high test score, a good essay is unlikely to add much, although a bad one may do some injury. If you are in the lower class rank/test score ranges of those usually admitted, the essay takes on more importance.
