Anyone out there applying EA to Emerson? Would be nice to start a thread so we aren't over here biting our nails alone. I'm writing for my daughter who is hoping to get into the Studio TV Production major. This is now her #1 choice.

From what I can make out, the VMA school has become incredibly competitive. I wonder if TV Production is as rough a rode to acceptance as film?

Thanks michiemichie! I think reviewing the stats is helpful to those applying in the future as well. When an applicant on the low side of the median is accepted it gives hope they look at apps holistically. When there is an acceptance on the high end of reported stats and they attend, it speaks well for the program.

Calculating gpa is one of those controversial barometers of success considering schools and curriculums vary to such a wide degree. My D’s school does not weight so I recalculated the above gpa with core classes only and used the typical 1 point for AP and .5 for honors to get her ‘core’ weighted gpa. One hopes her application doesn’t just scream … gpa, 3.4!! All part of the admissions game.

In looking over some posts from last year, the rumor was that 3.6 was the cutoff for film production but not sure if that was w or uw. Maybe this thread will help shed some light in the end.

Your gpa is fantastic no matter how you look at it! Wish you the very best luck come Dec. 14 at 11:00 am!

Hey guys!
I applied for film with a 3.3 UW GPA and a 2220 SAT (800 reading, 620 math, 800 writing). I heard rumors that they cut off at a certain GPA too (which I really hope aren’t true!) but I’ve also heard of kids with 3.0s and stuff getting in.
In any case, I also go to an arts magnet high school and major in film and creative writing so I really hope that will help my chances of getting in. I think my film and essay were strong as a result.

Oh, where else is your daughter looking at for tv/film?
I’m applying to NYU and Wesleyan as well but my GPA makes those kinda long shots. Also, USC and UCLA are a bit far for me and I’d really like to stay on this coast. Any tips for solid film programs around here?

Hi marymike! Welcome. Here is a link to a really nice thread that lists many schools with film majors. I think it’s a pretty great list… follow the thread to the end. Three pages I think.

I very rarely run into someone with stats similar to my D’s but yours are definitely! You are so lucky to have been in an arts magnet. My D is in a very rigorous private. They do have a wonderful advanced video production class, which she has really enjoyed. This year she is doing a senior capstone project.

She is also applying to: USC, NYU, Chapman, BU, Drexel and UT Austin. I frankly would be thrilled if she attended UT (we are in Texas) as a double major in film/tv and business… but it’s not my life now is it? :)!! For USC and NYU, she had to apply to the film department so she did submit a short film she worked on during a program last summer. My opinion is that it is quite funny and well written. It could use a little prettying up though. I think I remember NYU suggests a 10 minute sample. I suppose you’ll also be getting ready for that application? Or did you go for ED?

Wesleyan might be a stretch but it just might not be too. Look at your scores. It is true math is not as strong as your liberal arts which might be overlooked at a college like Wesleyan if served with a stellar supplement etc…

Thanks for the list, really helpful! Definitely going to apply to BU and possibly Drexel.
Yep, the NYU application is tough actually. They have a couple of those short answer supplement essays and then the 10 min video portion. Still have to figure what to submit for that. Also, if you’re daughter’s film shows she has potential its more than enough–it doesn’t really have to be a pretty and polished work of art, it only has to be the start of one. The point of film school would be to carry our skills from there.
And I applied EA. We’re supposed to hear back within the next three weeks, right? I’m kinda scared since its the first admissions decision I’m supposed to get.

As for Wesleyan, yeah, I’m definitely in the camp where I think even if there’s only a small chance you should go for it and apply if the school looks good. I mean, there’s nothing to lose really (except the application fee).

Yep… December 14th for EA. A week from this Friday! Did you go for the honors program?

A degree from Wesleyan would give you a great foundation for anything you wanted to do. It certainly doesn’t hurt to try and you do have a shot.

I’m hoping her visual sample makes them laugh, a hard thing to do I think. It made me laugh. She ultimately would like to create a successful sit com.

I wonder why there are fewer people posting this year? I have another thread under Chapman and it is the same there, just a trickle. I’ll look around. Maybe there is discussion on some of her other choices.

Well, don’t forget to let us know when you get your decision. Best of luck!!

My D applied EA for film post production. Tons of EC, editor of newspaper, president of media club, 3.74 gpa, 1870 sat. Waiting anxiously! Good luck everyone!

I applied EA for Writing, Literature, and Publishing. More specifically, Creative Writing. My GPA is a W 3.56, UW 3.08 and my essay/supplement answers are strong and passionate. I have 1750 SAT. My recommendations: one from my AP English and Composition teacher, guidance counselor, and I also have one from an Emerson Alumni. She wrote me an excellent letter and put me in contact with a published author. In her letter, she quoted the author stating that I should be “watched” because I have talent. Pretty cool!
I also have a load of ECs.

I have a question, though. My GPA is really a tough shot. I am relatively sure (based off of what I’ve read around the interwebz) that the film program at Emerson, due to its highly competitive nature, has a cut off GPA, being a 3.6. I’m wondering–IF this is true, of course–if there is a cut off GPA for the less competitive programs, like writing.

Also, do you think they mostly defer EA people? Would they straight up deny you EA? I could understand it in the competitive programs, I guess. Having a cut off GPA would do it. But for the other programs at Emerson, do you think they mostly defer people? Or is it perhaps easier to get in? Not only in a less competitive program (or a larger one like writing), but as EA?

Additionally, I read a stat on collegeboard.com that said that around 1,282 applicants out of 2,072 are admitted. That’s pretty good!

ahoward95, I didn’t find any indication that your major has a 3.6 cutoff. They will look at your application holistically and decide if you are a good fit. Your strong essays will be important!

I can only speculate, but if they do not accept you EA, I would expect a deferral rather than a rejection. It gives them time to further consider your application without committing.

Good luck to you! Where else are you applying?

I’ve talked to an admissions person at Emerson and there is no ‘cut off’ really for GPA or ACT/SAT. They will look at your application holistically so don’t worry! Essays are important and so are recommendations.

Ohmyitskai. That is too impressive! Way to hit the books! What career path do you want to work towards with the Theatre Studies degree? Are you applying to more schools in the area? All over the US?
