Early Action Class of 2019

Makk55…We’re from Texas.

Fla-no Mail yet but received a post card reminding her to apply for Hunt Scholarship by Jan-so I’m guessing she got in!!!

My son is accepted in EA. He got the envelope today. We live in the Dallas area. However, he’s disappointed he just got the Founder’s Scholar which gives $15k annually. this still makes his balance over 35k a year which is still too high for us. Does anyone know if it’s worth going for the Hunt Scholarship or any others?

@joranger–I believe I read here on CC that the department award notices come later so perhaps that amount will increase.

@bschooler2011, not a slam dunk, but very good.

If you check the graph at Cappex, there aren’t many people with your numbers who report not getting in. EA can’t hurt.

If I were laying bets, I’d put your odds at no worse than 80%.

Good luck.

@CATDECAL‌ will you chance me? I have a 1340/2050 SAT, and a 3.85 unweighted GPA. Also, any chance for Hunt Scholarship?

@CATDECAL‌ you seem to know a lot about admissions/scholarships at SMU, would you mind sharing your opinion on whether or not I would get the Cornerstone scholarship? I posted my stats earlier today

For those still awaiting the letter, PerunaLove is spot on. The packaging is beautiful!! The personalized acceptance letter is a nice touch too.

Not sure how the guy with the Baylor avatar got to be the person to ask about chances, but I’ll give it a go. Keep in mind that my info is based ONLY on publicly available information. I have zero inside info on SMU. My wife and mother-in-law are alumnae, but that is my only connection to the school, (other than it in my son’s top 2.)

So keep that in mind when assigning any weight to what I’m saying. It is no more than educated conjecture by an outsider.

@4tpriofgdsa, outstanding chance for admission. Can’t speak to the Hunt Scholarship without knowing more about your ECs, because it is my understanding that really look at your leadership related ECs. Your scores are OK, but not outstanding. My guess is that candidates must have an outstanding leadership profile. President of this club and that club at school probably won’t cut it. (Again stressing… just my opinion.)

@makk55, really not sure how they weight test scores vs. GPA. Your test scores are outstanding. GPA, is comparatively low. Your situation is not unlike my son’s in that regard. I have no idea how that will shake out, so we’ll both just wait and see. We’ll both likely know either today or tomorrow!

@CATDECAL‌ that’s about what I figured. Wishing you and your son best of luck today. Hopefully we all get a big red envelope

@makk55, and to be clear I was just talking about your chances for a particular scholarship. I have little doubt there is a big red envelope working its way to you as we speak!

I got second century and invitation to apply for presidential (do the interview and such). Since I am declining I don’t you if the money is going to someone else. I don’t know SMU’s policy but I hope someone else will get the money. For those curious I am a 33 ACT superscore 4.5 weighted 4.0 unweighted , AP scholar with distinction, currently valedictorian, and a NCWIT national runner up (an award for women in computing). But I have a disability so affirmative action may have helped.

@CATDECAL‌ what is your sons other top?

SMU does not superscore the ACT. They look at the highest composite score from any exam date. They also consider your unweighted GPA. Class rank and extracurricular activities also do not factor into scholarship decisions - it is solely based on your academic profile.

@hcasey315 Baylor and SMU are his top two choices.

He was pretty locked on Baylor for a while, (thus my Avatar) but SMU has him vacillating a bit.

Has anyone recieved anything?

@15aflynn nothing here in California!

Nothing here in New Orleans but I’m waiting on the mailman!

I got accepted and the Second Century Scholarship, but I don’t see anything about President’s Scholars or anything else does that mean I cannot compete?

Students qualifying as potential President’s Scholars are automatically reviewed and invited to interview by the scholarship committee. No interview invitations have been sent to President’s Scholars candidates as of yet, or so I’ve been told.
