His high school does rank students, does not award honors, does not offer AP classes and has limited honors classes. He took one dual-enrollment college math class.
Good extracurriculars.
Attended WPI presentation at his school and an admissions interview.
Likely good teacher recommendations.
Good essay.
From Southern California.
WPI is one of his top choices, but he likely will not attend due to finances. We will see what scholarships he can get. California in-state public universities are MUCH more affordable.
Hey folks, please list your SAT/ACT scores for each section. Reason being, technology schools typically weigh the math/science scores more heavily than a liberal arts school. Thanks.
D took ACT one time last February, 34C (35 Math, 35 Writing, 34 Reading, 31 Science). She reasoned that since she was not familiar with the type of science questions on the test, she missed a few (5 out of 36) and would like to retake the test. I persuaded her not to do so… “your grade is good enough (competitive enough) and any extra time and effort you have should be allocated to your research work. The work and its results are better indicators of your interests and abilities than a standardized test score.”
I am hoping that that was a good advice, and her research accomplishments would put her application in a unique light in this process. So far so good…
33 ACT ( 34 E, 34 M, 35 R, 29 S) Ugh that science.
Lot of APs, Valedictorian, good ECs including a research position. I was a little nervous on how metaphorical my essay was, but it seemed to be alright.
Anyone else receive their scholarship offers today? Ours came in lower than a comparably priced but more competitive school. We were surprised and disappointed - this one is high on the list but money is a factor.
We received the merit award. It’s good for us and D is definitely attending. D will apply for other scholarship but it will not change the choice of school. Drexel offered more merit award but the total cost of attendance at Drexel is $711K. So at the end of the day, WPI is cheaper than Drexel and WPI is a much better choice for our D.
Son received $7,000/year “WPI University Award.” Unfortunately, not enough to make WPI affordable for us. We are in Boston this week, so we are going to visit the campus tomorrow anyway. We will apply for the need-based financial aid, but I am not sure if we will qualify for anything more. Overall, I am pretty disappointed. WPI is a top pick for my son, and he worked hard to get accepted, and I feel bad that we can not afford to send him.
@smokinact, the acceptance letter and merit award letter were on his application status page - at the bottom. I expect that they have also been mailed.
