Early action/early decision

How much of a better chance do you have when you apply EA or ED?
Are the advantages/disadvantages of EA or ED different for each college?

Different for each college.

If you have and want to take advantage of legacy status, generally schools will only give you that extra "boost" if you apply early (assuming the school has an early option)

Take a look at the stats for the schools you're looking at; some schools admit nearly half the freshman class during the early round (Penn, for instance)

EA usually gives you absolutely no boost.

Schools like Penn and Cornell supposedly give a big advantage to ED applicants. Obviously, the disadvantage to ED would be the inability to compare financial aid offers. EA probably won't help you anywhere as it's not binding.

Does ED completely limit you to one school? Like can you only apply to one of Cornell or Penn given the binding nature?

^Yes. You can't enroll at both can you? You can apply ED to one school and EA or Regular to others though.

While that is true most of the time, be careful to double check the specifics of the schools you are considering. Some EA schools will not allow you to apply ED anywhere (but you can apply EA to other schools), while others might not allow you to apply early at all (with the exception of rolling admissions schools)

You can always apply RD, although if you are accepted somewhere ED, you must withdraw all your RD applications. If you don't, and you're caught, you risk having all of your admissions rescinded.

The program that does not allow you to apply EA anywhere else is called SCEA. It's in place at Stanford and Yale, I think.

Yes, Stanford and Yale (and others?) have Single-Choice Early Action.

An example of a school which has EA (not SCEA) but does not allow you to apply ED anywhere is Georgetown.

In short, just check the websites of all the schools you are interested in, to avoid any unpleasant surprises down the road.
