Early action mistake

Son accepted EA , sent enrollment deposit to secure dorm room(very limited housing available) before FinAid decision. After receiving Fin Aid decision, too costly to attend now, how does he cancel his admittance?

First,he should try to see if he can get better financial aid which may be possible particularly if he got better offers from other schools. If that’s not possible, then he just needs to let the college know he won’t be coming. He’ll probably lose his deposit, but there won’t be any other repercussions.

I agree with NSM re pursuing possible additional financial aid. But my comment addresses your deposit question.

My D had also sent a housing deposit to secure a dorm spot but ultimately did not attend. In her case, the deposit was to insure a space in the freshmen dorms which are notoriously full.

This deposit was refunded to us, minus $50, after she sent them a letter advising them she did not plan to attend. You may want to look into the fine print of your deposit to see if yours too was structured this way.
PS This school was a rolling admissions school.

Thanks so much for the replies!
The school does have a refund policy for the room deposit (sounds like same situation as curiouser’s D) as long as requested by May 1. I have sent letter advising that he will not attend, and requested refund. I am hoping that is enough. Is that all you did curiouser? Did you receive a response confirming your final decision?

He has another offer from another school that is much easier to handle financially so we will just go that route.

Thanks again for the help!
