Early Action/Restrictive Early Action/ED

I'm confused. Can you apply to as many Early Action schools as you want as long as you didn't apply to a Restrictive (or Single Choice) Early Action?

If you apply to one Early Decision school can you still apply to Early Action schools at the same time (but withdraw them if you get into your ED)?

yes and yes

Thank you! Our senior newsletter came out today and it contradicted what I thought.

You can apply to only one school ED

ED schools allow you to apply EA elsewhere

EA schools are then divided into three groups:

Those with SCEA (restrictive “single choice” early action) prohibit you from applying EA or ED elsewhere with some exceptions (e.g., they allow you to apply EA to your home state college)

Those EA schools which allow you to apply EA and ED elsewhere.

Those EA schools (e.g., Georgetown) which allow you to apply EA elsewhere but not ED

Thus, the answer to your first question is yes.

But the answer to your second question is yes for group 2 EA schools but no for group 3.

Also, the restricted or single choice EA schools have numerous exceptions to their rules against applying to other schools EA, such as public schools (may be just your home state, or any public schools), rolling admissions schools, schools outside the US, and schools where an early deadline exists for scholarships. Check each restricted or single choice EA school for details if that is a concern.
