Early Action switch to Regular Decision?

Is it at all possible to switch from an Early Action application to a Regular Decision application? I've already filled out the early action application, but now after receiving SAT subject test scores, I feel like I should retake the tests... Is it possible to switch applications even if the Early app is submitted, or should I just take my chances?

I don’t know your stats, but in all likelihood you’ll be deferred, so your application will be switched to RD anyway. And then there’s still a chance of acceptance. Your SAT II scores alone won’t get you rejected (maybe unless they’re abysmal). I’d take my chances.

I would recommend that you keep the early application. Even if you were to retake the subject tests and score higher, you can send them after you get deferred (unless you get rejected or accepted of course); the adcoms will still consider them. You would also have to send all your SAT subject tests anyways because Yale doesn’t allow score choice.

I’ve actually asked this question before. In addition, you can cancel your application, but I doubt you’ll be allowed to switch to regular decision. I also took subject tests in November. the college hasn’t received them yet…

Just don’t make this kind of switch at Georgetown. My son switched from EA to RD last year and they lost his application.

@718: what do mean by abysmal scores ? anything below 700?

If it’s anything below a 700 then I’m in the abyss. Now I’m wondering whether or not I need to send in SAT subject test scores. On the admissions website ([Standardized Testing for Freshman Applicants | Yale College Admissions](Standardized Testing Requirements & Policies | Yale College Undergraduate Admissions)) it says: * The SAT and any two SAT Subject Tests - or - * The ACT Plus Writing Test (emphasis on the or).
Thanks for all the input by the way, it really helps.

Below 700 isn’t abysmal. Below 600 will look pretty bad, though it alone won’t cause a rejection because admissions is a holistic process. Have you sent Yale SAT I scores? If so, you’ll have to send subject tests.

I haven’t read anything in this thread but the first sentence in the first post. The answer is yes, you can switch - just email your regional admissions officer. The decision is ultimately yours.

Try not to switch. It may cause extra problems for your application. Besides, even if you are deferred your application will be passed to RD round so don’t worry.

I’ve sent only ACT scores (I live in a rural area where the ACT is the only option unless I want to drive an hour to a city) so I only took the SAT Subject tests and the ACT.

You don’t need to send any subject test scores then. Don’t worry about it.
