Hi,
I applied to University of Michigan in Early Action and I got an email from their admission office:
Dear Ergun:
We appreciate your interest in being considered for admission under our Early Action program. Unfortunately, your application to the College of Engineering was not complete by Nov. 1. However, upon completion, your freshman application will receive full consideration in our Regular Decision program.
You may check the status of your credentials online through Enrollment Connect.
Basically, I was put into Regular Decision pool… The reason behind is my official SAT score. I sent my SAT score nearly a week ago but I don’t understand why they didn’t receive it. I know it takes up to 2 weeks but there is nothing I can do at this point. I think I am going to be evaluated in regular decision pool…
They also said:
If you requested an Early Action exception and are receiving this message, we were unable to approve your request. However, we have made note of your request in your file and will take this information into consideration as we evaluate your application.
“Nearly a week ago” was well after the 11/1 deadline. UofM’s website says, "***Your SAT/ACT test scores must be sent directly from the testing agency and received in our office by our deadline. Rush paper scores are not accepted. Scores from tests taken in October will not arrive in time to complete the application for Early Action. "
Nothing you can do at this point. The good news is that there is not a higher acceptance rate at UMich EA vs RD.
Good luck and make sure you leave plenty of time for all of your RD application components to be submitted. Some schools allow things to trickle in, while others, like UMich don’t.
I don’t think you can do anything at this point, but I’ll pass along a couple facts and some speculation on my part.
For the Class of 2022, since a breakdown of the Class of 2023 stats is N/A, roughly 20,000 of the 65,000 apps were sent as RD (apprx. 40,000 were EA). Roughly 50% of the total acceptances (almost 8,000) were admitted during EA.
I’ll disagree with the above poster. I think your acceptance chances MAY be lower in RD. If 8,000 applicants were admited EA, then about 7,000 +/- were admitted RD, because there were about a total of 15,000 acceptances.
While some EA applicants are rejected, most appear to be deferred, say 80% or 25,000-ish (80% of 32,000) are deferred. That means those 25,000 deferred applicants were added to the 20,000 RD apps and you would be competing with a total of 45,000 applicants during RD (25,000+20,000). UMich will accept 7,000 +/- MORE applicants for a total of 15,000 acceptances. So, I’d speculate that the acceptance rate during RD is roughly 15-16% +/- in RD (7,000/45,000).
The overall acceptance rate is 22.9% for the Class of 2023. If in-state your chances are much better than OOS. The OOS acceptance rate was 19%. The instate acceptance rate was 41%. Best of luck to you!
So can you do something? Yes you can. Write a quick note to your school’s AO for Michigan. Let them know your scores didn’t reach in time and the end result. But even due to this disappointment Michigan remains your top choice and would be honored to be accepted and be educated there.
Got it?
What Michigan considers the best applicants are admitted in EA. Many of these are the top in-state applicants. Also those from OOS feeder schools. Most of those not admitted in EA are deferred to RD. So without actually seeing the stats of deferred and RD applicants, it is hard to speculate about admission rates.
I tabulated both the February and a March RD waves for the Class of 2023. A summary of the stats of those two waves posted here on this site can be viewed in this cycle’s (Class of 2024) EA thread.
@ergunackz, I know it’s annoying, but there’s nothing you can possibly do at this time. The only thing I can think of is to email Admissions IMPORTANT questions… I don’t recommend – at all – emailing them just for the sake of emailing them. Hopefully when you hear back in regular decision it’ll be accepting!!! GOOD LUCK!
