Early Action vs Regular Decision? And Legacies?

Hi guys! So I was wondering about Early Action vs Regular Decision. I've heard from some people that applying EA gives you a bit of a better chance as long as you're competitive, but I've also heard that if you want to raise your GPA a bit, it's a better idea to wait until after first semester senior year grades are in. My school automatically sends my first semester grades though, whether the school asks for them or not. So I'm not sure what to do.

I'm taking a lot of APs senior year though and am doing really well, so for my reaches/on targets, I'm thinking I'll just apply RD, but I want to have the best chance possible.

Also, in terms of legacies, how much do those affect an applicant's chances? I know every school if different but an estimation would be greatly appreciated.

Any advice would be awesome! Thanks so much.

EA decisions are made before your first semester grades are sent. At many schools legacy is not considered. Google the Common Data Set for each school and look at section C7. It will show what elements are used for admission and the weight each one gets.

You have answered your question already. If you are a competitive candidate (i.e. at or above admission average in GPA and scores), you may try EA. If you need to improve your GPA or scores, then you need to wait and do RD. The advantage of EA can be significant or not, but improving scores/GPA from below average would definitely help more.
