dowzerw, Virginia Tech has a special program in fall called “Fall Visitation”, this is not Fall Open House. It is focused on recruiting certain populations like URM’s, or recruiting female students to traditionally male fields of study (engineering) and a few other groups. It’s a weekend long program of presentations, and at the end of the weekend they give each student their “on-site” admissions decision. I got my acceptance handed to me in an envelope by an admissions officer in mid-October. This decision is NOT binding as opposed to the “early decision” application that other students have completed. The weekend I went, there were about 120 students attending.
So, yes, I’m accepted to Virginia Tech and am thrilled, but I am definitely NOT obligated. I assure you, the fine print was read with extreme attention to detail.

Danny,
I’ve been accepted to Virginia Tech, U of TN, and USC
Deferred at NC State.

so nervous really hope we find out next week the admission office said the last week of january we will get an email but i hope its alot sooner then that

wat’s the acceptance rate for EA compared to RD? (higher? about same? more competitive?)

@southerndude

I’ve also been deferred at NCSU, which was sort of odd considering my SAT score was far above their 25%tile, along with my other stats. What were your stats?

@Ach
My stats aren’t so great, I have an ACT of 25 and a weighted GPA of 3.88. UW of 3.1.
I never took the SAT exam.
But, I have taken many AP’s, I’m an excellent athlete at a highly competitive level, lots of volunteer work.
I am Latino, originally from Central America.

less than a week! (Hopefully) it’s getting down to the wire. I plan on keeping myself as busy as possible this week because thinking about it makes me slightly sick. Congrats to anyone who heard good news from UVA yesterday! I know some people who did and they’re all super excited!

Is the 18th a speculative or official date?

Speculative, but UNC has a history of sending out announcements that 3rd weekend of January and, as of recent years, releases the info on Friday evening. Best of luck to all!

I hope they come next Friday. My D got in to UVA yesterday and was elated. Now that she has one settled, I’d like to be able to click “accept” somewhere and just move past this stress!

Congratulations 89wahoo on the UVA acceptance for your D!!! Wahoo-Wa!! My sister went to UVA and loved it! Her graduation was the most beautiful graduation I’ve ever seen, where all the graduates “walk the Lawn”. Best of luck to your D in selecting her options.

Just wondering how those of you more in the know would compare UVA and UNC if your son or daughter got into both? I realize if you were in in-stater you might choose the one in your state for financial reasons. But if you were OOS, what would you consider between those two?

I think UNC and UVA are both very similar. Charlottesville is a really cool town and I thought it was slightly edgier or something than the typical college town of chapel hill. I ended up not applying to UVA because after touring both I just felt at home at UNC. So maybe tour both and see what you think! They’re both beautiful!

Kdelaney- my son is OOS and applied to both (awaiting EA decision from UNC soon). Both are great schools and great campuses. I guess it really boils down to what you want to study. UVA has more OOS students than UNC.

Thanks, ThinkPink and PsychoDad. I guess that both UNC and UVA have similarly strong reputations around the country, for employment later on or for going to grad school?

Last year letters were received by some on the third Thursday of Jan (19th). Online decisions were up at about 4.30 the next day. That’s this week folks.
What do you think? Are decisions out this week?

Hopefully! I’m checking here for updates: <a href=“UNC Admissions Blog”>http://unc-admissions.blogspot.com/search?updated-min=2013-01-01T00:00:00-05:00&updated-max=2014-01-01T00:00:00-05:00&max-results=2&m=1

Southerndude, thank you for the UVA congratulations! That was really nice.
kdelaney, I obviously have an affinity for UVA since I attended, and I can say for certain that D has been hearing me extol the virtues for years. Additionally, being IS with several more children to put through college is a factor for us. That said, both D and I loved UNC. Unfortunately, we had to self-tour since we were there for a soccer tournament and there were no tours on Saturdays. The initial plan had been to go tour if she got in but as we were in Raleigh anyway, we went ourselves.
They look very similar. Lots of buildings frame open areas with nice big trees for shade on warm days. The students “looked” the same. Somehow we missed finding dining halls at UNC which we didn’t even realize until after we left. (??) The restaurants were nice, with variety. Facilities we went into were lovely. I liked the layout.
UVA is beautiful. I know where the dining halls are, and they are spread around the “grounds”. Residence halls are in decent proximity to classes, and bus service is easy to use. Libraries are plentiful and have different “feels” so there is one that “suits” everyone (do you want dead quiet, a little activity, to be completely osolated, etc). The school spirit at UVA is crazy high; students love their school. I believe its the same at UNC. Both schools are big enough that you’ll have plenty of options with regard to activities and many different kinds of people. I really think it is a matter of preference (not to mention budget!). Good luck to everyone. Getting into either school is a great accomplishment, and I can imagine some of you who are fortunate enough to get into both will have tough decisions to make…

Southerndude and bourne13: congrats.
Is the SC in USC — > South Carolina or Southern California?

Does anyone know when scholarship day notifications will come out? I know it’s usually a couple of days after admission letters, but considering scholarship day is scheduled for early February? Very excited/nervous for this week! (:
