I am definitely applying to my dream school early decision but am not sure whether I should apply to all other schools (about 6) early action. Would each school I apply early action to know that in applying to many schools EA? Would this worsen my chances at of getting in EA somewhere?

The whole reason to follow a path like yours: ED with EA and RD schools to follow – is to WAIT for the ED decision so you don’t have to expend all the $ and time to submit the others. EA shows no particular boost in one’s overall chances – other than to get it out of the way. Thus the conventional wisdom for you is to wait for your ED school to inform you of its decision and then submit the RD apps to the other schools if the ED decision isn’t “accept”.

Schools do not know what others you’ve submitted EA to. Thus it won’t affect your chances.

Note that many schools have the merit scholarships tied with EA application. In other words, RD are not eligible. I would not wait for ED result particularly for reach schools before applying others EA.

well you know… I hadn’t thought of bill’s scenario. Feel free to ignore my post! LOL

I would submit the ED application, and EAs required for other reasons like merit aid, and possible one more EA school.

If there is safety or solid match that you really like a lot I’s suggest also submitting that application EA … this assumes an EA admission from this school would greatly shrink the list of RD applications if you do not get into your ED school. So the strategy would something like this
- Apply to ED and EA school
- If you get into ED school your done … big yea!
- If you get into your EA but not your ED school then in the RD round apply to schools that might trump the EA school but do not apply to school below it … hopefully this leave a handful or less for the RD round
- If you do not get into either the ED or EA schools … apply to the full set of schools RD.

I think that one targeted EA school can provide relief with an acceptance, save money, and save time over only submitting the ED application.
