can you apply early action to more than one school, and how is it different then early decision? Thanks

Yeah, it's not bonding.

Check with each college to which you intend to apply early action, which is non-binding. Most allow you to apply early action or even early decision elsewhere but some prohibit you from doing so, e.g., Harvard, Yale, Stanford.

With early decision, you are commiting to attend the school if accepted. With early action, you are not making such a commitment. Therefore, you can only apply to one early decision school by definition. Most early action schools do not have such restriction. As Drusba lists, Stanford, Yale do. You do need to read the apps carefully because things do change year to year. Also some high schools restrict the number of EA apps they allow a student to send. So check with your GC. Usually you can apply ED to one school, and EA to any number of schools, but there are ED schools that do not want EA competition, so again, you need to check each situation carefully.
