Bizarre. My friend just got a letter from the University of Rochester saying that he was accepted. I was under the impression that this is a bit bizarre... after all, I'm fairly positive that U of R is not rolling admissions. So what happened? Is there anyone else that has had this happened to them? Is this perhaps an indication that he has been chosen as a Renaissance scholar finalist? He didn't apply ED II.

no clue, decisions are set for mid-march to come out...

If he is a Renaissance Scholar finalist, then, yes he would know that he is being admitted because they have to go interview in March. I imagine that is why he knows he has been admitted.

The letter should also tell him if he's been asked to interview for the Renaissance scholarship. They guarantee S40,000 with the possibility of a full tuition scholarship. Ten out of 50 kids interviewed get that.

If the letter doesn't say this, then I'm not sure why your friend heard early.

hmm.. yes, indeed he was invited to interview.. tho something tells me he's on the bottom part of those 50. (just a suspicion)

haha, so what is the renaissance scholarship?

ooohhh.. wow. i just realized something.

so i was looking over my app not long ago.. which i submitted very early, before checking over my essays because i thought the submit button would bring me to a confirmation screen, out of which i could back out..

and omg. i made soooo many darn mistakes. and now i've talked to my friend, who has the same stats as me (like literally, we differ like 20 points on SAT I, and like 30 points combined on SAT II) and who got the renaissance thing. and i started thinking. wow, would it suck if me being stupid cause me to miss the full tuition opportunity.

stupid mistakes will kill me one day.. (i find this situation funny in some ways)...

Have all the Renaissance scholar semifinalists already had a previous interview?

Suman - The Renaissance Scholarship is full tuition for 4 years awarded to 10 students. Fifty students are selected as finalists and are invited to the campus in early March for activities, an overnight and an interview. The winners will be selected from the group that attends the March event.

Rhs - My son is a finalist and he interviewed last fall. They STRONGLY recommend interviews for people wanting to be considered for merit awards but obviously I don't know if all the finalists have interviewed already.

wait so if i already got my financial package, does that mean i didn't get that scholarship? how do i get more merit awards? get an interview? even after i got accepted?

renaissance scholarship is fancy and u would have already heard about it if u got it, as it seems the students that get it are admitted and hear about it very quickly. interestingly enough, i don't really see how this process would work for ED candidates - do they simply not qualify?

as for getting more merit aid, i think ur pretty much done once u get ur financial aid packet. that's the problem with ED - if u had heard back from other schools, u could have used them as a bargaining tool and at least got more grants - free financial aid. but u can't... so im pretty sure ur stuck with the amount of money u got.

aww mann..well, i got like 5000 in fed sub loan and perkins loan, 2500 in work study, and 20k in a rochester grant. hmm...so i'm done?u think i should try to contact them or something? and find out if i can get more money? or is this a good amount?

Chemaddict - I think the Renaissance scholarships are offered to really strong candidates that they are trying to convince to come to the school. If you are admitted ED, they don't need to attract you. You have already committed to attend so my guess is that ED admittances are not part of the Renaissance scholar pool. That is one of the drawbacks to ED at most schools.

makes sense. makes a lot of sense, actually. as for the scholarship packet, 20k in grants is pretty good... in fact, i'd take that pretty happily. but then again, it depends on what ur EFC is/what ur family can pay - that's a total of 27500, which is a good 15k under the rocheter yearly fee.

as for calling.. i don't think there is much u can do in rochester. in fact, im sure u can't. the only thing left is getting outside scholarships.

well my parents are like we want to pay as little as possible, our efc is like 11k...
