Early Admissions Status?

Hi,

Someone from my school apparently got into Harvard a week or two ago because of an early notification (possibly something they do for minority students? I received a similar early RD acceptance for Vanderbilt's Mosaic weekend). I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about people finding about Harvard/Ivy admissions early WITHOUT receiving a likely letter.

Generally it’s just that they get a phone call before the letter. It’s possible that the likely letter is in the mail. Took me about a full week to get my admissions package last year.

By the way, your ignorance is showing. “Is this something they do for minority students?” Nice.

Some schools notify low income candidates early that they’re admitted as they provide funds for the visiting weekend. Many times, these are minority applicants. Maybe that’s what he or she is referring to and not a referendum on minority applicants as a whole. At any rate, we’ll all know our status in less than an hour, so either way an early admissions question really is moot at this point.

My son was formally accepted this week but had an informal “head’s up” last week. We were contacted yesterday and asked if he would be attending the new admits weekend. They said financial aid was available.

misterg, I was talking specifically about someone who did not receive a likely letter but whose application status apparently changed to “accepted” a week before decisions went out. I don’t see how asking about minority acceptances is ignorant as I stated that I myself received an early admission to Vanderbilt for a minority program and I know someone who received a similar admission to WashU. And the minority thing was the guess of the person who actually received the decision.

Anyway, I was just curious if anyone knew if this was regarding “desirability” if you will, like likely letters, or simply a certain demographic of applicants, or what. Thanks for your responses, dmb and rumson. And congratulations to your son!
