Early Applicants and Financial Aid

Do students admitted Early Action/Decision receive their financial aid packages early (once they've turned in the required forms)? Or do they have to wait it out with the RD applicants?

Interesting question, I’ve heard you recieve FA with regular admission.

I’m guessing that’s the case, but it would be pretty nifty if they sent them early.

Anyone care to backup Coolbreeze’s info?

You get a financial aid estimate with your early acceptance, based on the numbers you turn in. Typically, if your family’s next 1040 shows a significant difference from last year’s 1040 or what was estimated, your final package can go up or down, depending.

In any case, you can ask the school about the details of its early FA policy, if their web site doesn’t explain sufficiently.

In some cases you may also ask for an “early read” of your award prior to applying. We did that w/DD and the early read was basically the same as her final award.

By this I mean most students do not forward their acceptance too quick ( or at least that’s what I’ve reviewed) until they can compare and get a clear ideal what their being offered in financial aid.

This is the difference between EA and ED. With ED, you must decide before RD FA offers come in; with EA you don’t. It’s possible to compare one ED FA offer with multiple EA FA offers, but you must decide on the ED FA offer early.

I think you guys are misunderstanding the question.

Example: I apply to X university Early Action. I get admitted in December. I turn in my FAFSA/CSS/whatever on January 1. When will they send me my financial package? Right away (since I’m already admitted) or do they just send it with all the other financial packages in April?

You will receive the package sometimes in mid February or so.

My son’s EA’s were scattered as far as FA. I would have to look up his old papers for exact dates, but they were earlier than his RD. That said, my initial fafsa was estimated so they did change a bit when the final fafsa was in.

My daughter’s financial aid package arrived in the mail three days after her ED decision was made available online. Mid-December.

My son applied to five schools EA, and every one of them sent the financial aid package at the same time as the RD students got them. It was tough, an acceptance in hand, but waiting months to find out if it was financially feasable.

This thread is proof we’re getting way to many acronyms in the field.

Kudos to the first person who can answer this question with using no less than 50% acronyms.
