Early Applications - Statistics Class of 2018

This is a follow-up on last year's thread:

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1418161-early-applications-growth-decline-class-2017-a.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1418161-early-applications-growth-decline-class-2017-a.html</a></p>

The numbers have started to come in. As an example, Dartmouth just released this:

[quote]
Four hundred sixty-nine students were admitted to the Class of 2018 through the early decision process, the College announced on Dec. 11. The accepted students — selected from 1,678 early applicants — are intended to make up 40 percent of the Class of 2018, according to a College press release. The College received 1,678 early decision applications for the Class of 2018 as of the Nov. 8 deadline, a 6.7 percent increase from last year

The early decision numbers reflect a 27.9 percent acceptance rate, a nearly 2 percent decrease from the early admissions rate for the Class of 2017.

The mean SAT score for admitted students is 2156, and the mean ACT is 32.1, the press release states. The average SAT is slightly higher than last year’s mean of 2141 for students admitted through the early decision process, as well as the averages of 2146 and 2144 for the Classes of 2016 and 2015 respectivel

Durham, NC - On Thursday evening, 797 high school seniors will find out they are the first members of Duke University’s Class of 2018. Last year, the university accepted 753 students through Early Decision.

This year, 3,180 students applied under Duke’s Early Decision program, a 25 percent increase over last year and the largest number ever recorded.

Even with the increase in the number of students admitted, the admit rate for Early Decision decreased to 25 percent, the most selective Early Decision process in Duke’s history.

Students admitted through Early Decision this year will represent almost 47 percent of next fall’s incoming class, which is expected to include 1,705 students. Of the 797 students offered admission, 643 will enroll in the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences and the remaining 154 will enroll in the Pratt School of Engineering.

(a little old)

Swarthmore had an 8% boost.

The question is here with the in increase in the number of early applicants is do early application rates drop with the effect of lowering the overall acceptance rates but keeps the percent of early applicants in the class the same or do they keep the early acceptance rates the same increasing the portion of the incoming class applying early and thereby drastically reducing overall the acceptance rates. That was a long sentance.

@oompaloompa64 Data are often from news stories; if so they should be linked to the CC post. If there’s no source, you might ask the poster to add or explain their source or do a Google search and post a source yourself. I don’t think there is bias on this board. It seems like not all schools release their stats (in a timely manner) or else they don’t get picked up by the media. For example, @prodigykyle I searched for Rice and didn’t get anything for this year. @Heatfan1009 If you search for NCSU, go ahead and post the results. Historical EA results are usually available for schools if you search for “common data set” and the school name. For example, here are Rice’s reports [Common Data Set : Rice University Office of Institutional Research](http://www.oir.rice.edu/Common_Data_Set/)
