Has Stanford's round of likely letters been sent out yet? And does anyone know if Stanford sends these out in waves, or all at once? :D

I believe they are sent in waves. A kid at my school received one earlier this month already, but I’ve heard of people receiving them as late as late February.

What types of applicants get these letters? I’ve heard extremely well-qualified athletes often get them. Did this person at your school have a significant “hook” (research competitions, etc). Thanks for the info!!

Extremely well-qualified athletes indeed. This guy did not have any specific hooks, but his resume looks absolutely amazing. He created a local UNESCO chapter, has a published magazine, etc. Honestly most of it is resume stuffing but it looks amazing nevertheless. If you’re not an athlete and if you don’t have any special hook, these likely letters are given out somewhat randomly to already accepted applicants, and only 1% of them in any case. Don’t worry if you didn’t get one.

out of curiosity, has anyone else received one?

I just received mine! Tough choice between Dartmouth and Stanford. California dreaming! Good luck to everyone. Can’t wait to meet you all.

^^that’s funny…I love your dubious post…especially coming from the Harvard thread. Didn’t know you stooped to apply to a “non-ivy league school” out of the blue…

…would be nice to see a copy of your phantom “likely” letter…

Never said I applied to all Ivies.

^^you see how this all looks…after our discussion on the Harvard thread…it seems all too “convenient” and incredible that your first post on a Stanford thread is about “receiving” a likely letter along with Dartmouth in the same sentence…very suspicious…

…here on CC…we like to try and keep the discussions honest. There are enough trolls on CC who make up all kinds of stories, statistics, and outright lies about this and that and their so-called phantom “acceptances” and “rejections” to certain phantom schools…I don’t know why…but they do…

^^ I don’t care how it looks to you. I’m not going to let you sour one of the best days of my life.

@bangkoknight…

Congrats!

@bob1235 - these likelies are not for the athletes (they are recruited much earlier), they are sent to people that the college wants to particularly get thinking about committing to Stanford.

For others, last year they started coming in 3rd week of February through about mid-March.

Redsnow has it right. Don’t worry if you don’t get one. The only thing that matters is what they tell you at the end of March. I know some amazing, amazing students who got in but did not get a likely.

So you are saying it’s highly unlikely that most will get a likely letter but it’s not like they don’t like you, it’s just that they aren’t likely to tell you that they like you, but that shouldn’t make you feel like they don’t like you. Yet.

@chappa best comment i’ve ever seen on cc!

@chappa
Exactly. A likely letter means that they liked you so much or accepted you early enough that they just sent out an additional letter to let you know earlier and make you like the university a bit more. It’s not random, but such a small amount of accepted applicants get them and those who do are often just chosen on a whim. It’s perfectly possible that you’ve already been accepted, they just decided to not send you a likely letter. If you get one, awesome! If you don’t, it doesn’t really mean anything.
