If you choose to arrive a day early for CalSO, are you assigned a roommate or given your own accommodation?

excellent question! i wanna know too!

Experience from last year:

You get a roomie (for both nights). CalSO roomies are ‘assigned’ on the spot in order of arrival. So say you’re the #33rd to arrive (on the Early Arrival day). You’re assigned a room and given a key. When #34 arrives, s/he will be given the other key to your room and become your roomie for the next two days (:

Thanks for the reply!

Two more questions:

1) If when I registered for CalSO I didn’t sign up for early arrival, can I show up early anyways? I assume it costs extra, so I would have a check ready. :P

2) If a friend and I show up at the same time, could we sort of “request” each other as roommates? I mean, it sounds pretty flexible already anyways.

1) Not sure - I think you should email the CalSO office now (the email should be on their website and they’re pretty responsive) and tell them you’ve changed your mind and now want to arrive early etc. It gives them (and you!) more time to prepare. Surely this is much better than randomly showing up on the day itself and risk being turned away (:

2) Yes. Just show up together and say you want to room together.

DEFINITELY EMAIL THEM BEFORE HAND. Don’t just show up and expect to be accommodated.

From my experience at CalSO, I was the first person to show up in the morning. My roommate was already in the room, however, because he flew in the day before. That kinda gives you an idea of how it works.

If you want to room with your friend, just stand next to each other in line. Tell the people distributing the keys that you want to room together so they can give both of you the same key.

Don’t room with a friend…college, including orientation is about meeting as many people as possible. If you make a new friend along with the friend coming with you, then you have 2 other people (at least) to hang out with at night. Yeah, you meet people in your groups, but why not maximize the potential?

You want to meet as many people as possible for study buddies, friends in classes, people to hang out with, etc.
