Early Chances

While I am not ready to apply for college I am wondering what my chances are on the track I am on.

Colleges:
Harvard, Cornell, Princeton, Yale , Stanford
(mainly upper tier -- if I can get in there I can get in anywhere, I hope)

High School: Suburban Good Public, White and Asian, COMPETITIVE
GPA: Weighted: around 4.5 possibly higher
Unweighted: at least 3.9 probably 4

SAT: 2300+
SAT IIs: I do not know what I am going to take

Courses:

Freshman:
Algebra II/Trig Honors
English 9 Honors
Biology
Spanish II

Sophomore:
AP Calculus BC
English 10 Honors
AP Chemistry
AP Chemistry
AP World History
Spanish III

Junior: (Predicted)
AP Calculus D
AP English Language
AP Physics B
Video Film
AP US History

Senior: (Predicted)
Linear Algebra
AP English Literature
AP Physics C
AP Economics/AP Pyschology
AP American Government

ECs: (a little weak because no academics, not typical CCer)
4 Years Varsity Track
4 Years Basketball 2 Varsity
4 Years Football 2 Varsity
None of these I could compete or would want to at college level.
I might do some Community service

Awards:
Numerous leadership awards for sports.

Any feedback is appreciated. I am nervous and I want to know where I stand and what I can do to better my chances. I have nothing that really pops out except that I expect to do well in the interview because I am decently personable.

THANKS!!

No outstanding EC or awards. No volunteer. Wacky GPA (4.5?), schools will definitely unweight that and recalculate that into their own system. You have a good change but dont expect to get into like Princeton or Harvard. The other "lesser" IVY you have a good chance. Top Public schools you'll probably get in.

You won't get into ivies with a D on your record, and probably not with a C. If you haven't taken those yet, why would you go for AP?

Hmmm what do you mean wacky GPA? It is a 4.0 scale with 5 points for AP classes. The AP classes raise the GPA to higher than 4.0. I don't see how 4.5 would be low.

I don't have a D or a C. Are you referring to Calc BC and Calc D, because those are the names of the classes not the grade.

Any other advice?
THANKS

Also do you think only 3 years of Spanish will hurt me?

how do u have an ap calc d class? theres only 2 ap calc (tests): calc ab & calc bc...

BC is the max for calc. Schools that do 5.0 scale for gpa imo, is wacky. And I didnt say 4.5 was low, I meant the 3.9. Always go with your unweighed gpa. I mean honestly 3.9 isnt low, but for some of the schools like harvard is "low" since you dont have any outstanding EC or volunteering. You can probably get into Cornell, Darthmouth, Brown. But it would be hard for Harvard, Princeton, and MIT. UPenn (depending on which school you apply to) would be a good deal, and so would stanford.

Your projected academic track looks fine except for not getting four years of language.

It looks like you're currently a sophomore. I'd recommend focusing on some community service or other ECs sooner rather than later so they don't look like last minute resume padders.

Thank you for all the info!

You are right the Calc D course is not AP but it is a college class. I think it uses the SDSU standards. Also, Linear Algebra is not AP but it is a college course.

I am just predicting a 3.9 because I think I might get a B in online Spanish. How hard is it to get an A in online Spanish -- I am taking it on BYU? Also, would you guys suggest doing even a fourth year of Spanish online. Spanish 3 will be my first online class.

Just wondering, I will not do anything that I do not like, what do you guys think I should do to improve my app? Once again, I will only do it if I enjoy it -- I enjoy most things.

Also, I am in CSF if that matters. Probably not, lol.

So what do you think of my chances now.

I'd suggest not thinking about your chances as much as thinking about how you can increase the competitiveness of your profile. There will be thousands of kids trying to get into those schools who will be similarly academically qualified. That won't be enough. You've got to set yourself apart in another way. It can be community service, recruitable athletics, leadership, whatever, but don't think that top academics alone will get you into a dream school. Good luck.

Are you assuming you'll get 2300+...?

I hate "predicted" chances.

Lol ya it is sort of a dumb prediction but I think that I will be able to. I got 200 on my first PSAT and I realized now how to answer the questions I missed. On that same test it said I did not answer all of the questions in math when I know I did. Ya...I know the PSAT is different than the SAT but that was freshman year.

I think I will do some community service with my friend...now where to go. Anyone with any brilliant ideas?

Just wondering, does being a club president, secretary etc mean anything. I don't have time to do any but I also have not found any that I am too intersted in to sacrifice my sports. That is also why I am not doing speech and debate...damn those 3 hour football practices.

So what else would make me more competitive. And to chances, are these upper-level schools reaches or what? Do I stand a chance in getting into a Princeton?

Princeton is a crapshoot for everyone, but you'll be a fair applicant.

Being an officer in a club demonstrates leadership and a willingness to take on responsibility. Community service will depend widely based on your local opportunities and circumstances, so you'll have to find that on your own.

Just follow the standard CC route and hopefully you'll get in somewhere. The chances thing is overrated.

how do you go from algebra II and trig honors in the same year to AP Calc BC.. did you take calc during the summer or something??? and what year are you?

Algebra II/Trig Honors is one class. We go over Algebra first semester then Trig in the second. I am skipping Pre-Calc becuase it does little to prepare you for Calc at my school. It is just a review of Algebra II.

I am taking BC next year since I have a hundred in math right now. I am a freshman right now. I just am wondering where I would be able to go if I do not do anything extra than what I am doing anything right now.

Another question, how much do the essays matter?

A 300 point increase is a pretty steep prediction for your SATs. That doesn't seem that realistic.

I think I will be able to because I took the PSAT as a freshman and it was my first test of the kind. I did not take as much time on it as I will on the PSAT. Also, I will be better at this once I am a junior. But, only time will tell.

how'd you skip pre-calculus and calculus AB?
two chem ap's in your sophmore year?
I believe chemistry is a pre-requisite for ap chem.

I skipped PreCalculus because the teacher said I would be able to. AP chem is a double block with Double Chem first semester then Double AP Chem the second.

Calculus BC is basically ABC. You do not take AB then BC. BC is just faster moving and covers more material.

oh wow going from trig to calc bc sounds tough.. that's a lot of material to cover without knowing the basics of calculus, but i guess it's possible.
