Early decision 2014--was it competitive?

I was so happy to get into brown,
but at school one of my classmates told me that Brown is so easy to get into if you do ED and that anyone could have gotten in… :(

For some reason, what he told me is kinda bothering me right now

I checked the Official Decision thread and it seemed like alot of ppl got in
(congrats by the way to everyone who got it  )

Of course, I don’t agree with what he said.
But, just out of curiosity:
was it easier to get in this year ED?
Or was it really competitive?

Is this really a serious question? He’s probably just jealous you got accepted. But I’ll answer seriously:

Brown has not released any statistics about its acceptance rate yet; the Brown Daily Herald isn’t publishing right now, so no info from there.

But given that there was a 20 percent increase in early decision applications and I doubt Brown doubled the number accepted ED – it was very competitive. In past years, the ED acceptance rate has been in the low 20 percent range. I would guess it went down this year.

And many people who were denied and deferred just don’t post their results here.

I was just curious, that’s all. Thanks for posting a reply. my sister was also asking me how competitive Brown ED was this year (and actually just Brown Ed overall), because she also wants to apply to brown early next year.

someone from my school got accepted ED with a 31 ACT and a not so stellar gpa (not sure what it was). i thought he was a little underqualified but he was also on broadway some years ago for some time; it is likely this played a large role. Still a great accomplishment congrats!

Tell him to take a look at the ED acceptance rate compared to Penn or even Dartmouth this year…

whoever said that is a complete idiot that’s just jealous he/she didnt get in!

I really don’t think so.
Brown’s acceptance rate in past years for ED has been 20-30%.
I doubt it would have increased this year, considering that there was 20% increase in ED applicants.

If by “anybody” he meant ~25% or 1 out of every 4 people that applied, then sure, I guess “anybody” could get in, but there are a lot of very very qualified deferred and rejected people in the ED results thread that would probably take issue with that statement.

Your Classmate = Sour Grapes.

Congratulations on your stellar achievement. This will NOT be the last time you hear people talk like this. My mantra…“Smile and nod”. Then take your Ivy degree the bank.

Lol I guess I must be pretty ■■■■■■■■ for getting deferred.

Your classmates are jealous. Brown ED is indeed extremely competitive. Only about 550 of 2,850 students were accepted. Take a look at the ED thread and look at all the 4.0’s and 2200’s that were deferred or even rejected!

Classmates who are applying to the same places as you will never be happy for you. Don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t deserve it.

You know the Ivy Leauge… just SO easy to get into.
What I have to ask smileeLv, is where is this delusional person going to school next year?

And if you include the 21% increase in applicants, the acceptance rate was around 16-18%. GOSH! 16%?! That’s sooooo many people.

what an idiot.

Last year Brown’s early period rate was just above Columbia’s and below Dartmouth’s, Penn’s, and Cornell’s. This year’s rate is likely to be lower than Columbia’s, just as it was in December, 2007.

[Ivy League Admission Statistics](http://www.theivycoach.com/ivy-league-admissions-statistics-2007-2008-2009-2010.html)

Another way to look at it is to observe that this year’s rate might very well be about the same as Yale’s early rate only two years ago.

To Filmnerd: actually he got deferred or denied from Georgetown EA, and now he says he will get into Boston and saying how hard it is to get in to Boston college.
Not that boston college is not a great school (it is a good school IMO) but I just got mad that he was talking behind my back and saying bad stuff about brown cuz I luv brown w/my heart
Anyways, all the posts you guys wrote made me feel better cuz now I know that my hard work during high school did pay off  I can’t wait to go to brown next year!!

OP, whoever said that to use is the biggest idiot, and is jealous of your accomplishment. ivies are always competitive, no matter what the year. if its sooo easy to get in early decsion, i want him to talk to the 2300 people who werent offered admission and see how easy it was. they probably have better resumes than him.

This reminds me of a girl at my school who is applying to Brown because it is the “easiest Ivy to get into.” This is a girl who has showed up to class 6 times, is ranked in the 200s out out 350,and has an outstanding low 20 ACT to boot. ==automatic acceptance because it’s so easy!!

Oh, God X_x

YOu mentioned Brown and G-town.

FYI…My D is applying to both. I feel she has nearly ZERO chance at Brown, but more like 50-50 change at G-town. IMHO. Again…you go girl and don’t let those comments get you down. You’re in. You’re Ivy. You’re Brown. And your classmate is still scrambling for a spot somewhere. I mean, you don’t want to be cocky like he/she is…but…DO have confidence in yourself!

Thank you for your advice R124687
I hope your daughter gets into both :)

to me ED was very competitive… I was deferred =( but at least there’s still the possibility of getting in RD!

i’ve been wondering if ED really does give an advantage
people say it does, but i figure if they accept people that were deferred early, then everyone they accept early would have gotten in RD.

if someone is accepted early, they were in direct competition with someone that got deferred. i’m guessing that would mean they were a “better”/ more competitive applicant. they “beat” the person that got deferred.

so if that deferred person gets in RD, the ED accepted person would, logically, have gotten in then too.

i have no idea if that made any sense whatsoever…
