Early Decision and Early Action

Can you do Early Decision to “College A” and Early Action to “College B”?

nope......

I don't see why not. Can someone explain?

It depends if the Early Action or Early Decision are single-choice.

^ditto.. most EA/ED are single-choice. Most EA usually lets you apply to public schools EA,but not ED.. ED is binding, so usually they won't let you apply anywhere else.. you have to check on their policies. Harvard allows you to apply ED II, which is after their notification (Dec. 15). If you have a list of colleges you're applying to, note their ED/EA policies.

ella:

sorry, but most EA are NOT single choice; indeed, there are only a few SCEA (Stanford, Yale...). Most EA schools will allow you to apply elsewhere at the same time.

ED is binding, but not single choice either. You can only apply to one school ED, but as many other EA schools as you wish, as long at they are not one of the aforementioned Single Choice EA's.

thanks for correcting me.. my GC had always maintained to apply to one EA school only, or none at all (the latter being the preference).. i really appreciate it.

Some ED and EA schools have single choice requirements. You cannot apply early to these schools if you want more than one ED/EA choice. But otherwise, the rule is only one ED schools since the decision is binding and as many EA choices that you want as long the those choices and that ED choice do not stipulate that they are single choice.

You need to read each school's rules carefully. It is possible to apply EA to one school and ED to another; of course if you get into the ED school you have to go there.

My son applied EA to one school and ED to another. He called each school on an anonymous basis to make sure this was permissible because it was not completely clear reading each school's website.

Some ED schools (Princeton, and Brown too I think) don't allow you to apply EA to other places

what about dartmouth ed? does dmouth allow you to apply EA to other schools?

Which schools have this "single choice" requirement? Do all the ivies have it? What about non-Ivy schools?

You all need to read the stipulations in the new apps VERY carefully. Things can change from year to year. I believe there is a discussion from an Admissionsrep about schools who are considering change to SCEA next year and this is an issue that the schools are contemplating. You cannot go from the prior year's info or from kids who applied several years ago as admissions is such a dynamic and volatile field these days.
