Early Decision and Financial Aid

I just received an early decision acceptance to Northwestern, Bienen school of music, but I'm now worried about financial aid. I'm aware I can pull out of the agreement if I don't receive enough aid, but then my other applications are pulled? Is there a way I can apply to other schools in case aid doesn't come through?

Another problem is my family is in the highest income bracket, but my parents (as they've now told me after I submitted) don't want to pay a lot for my education, if anything.

It’s a shame they didn’t tell you that before. Typically you can decline EA if the finances don’t work.

Don’t pull your other applications until you’ve received the financial aid award information from NW and made a decision on affordability. Obviously, the time to have the money discussion with your parents was before you started sending in applications.

Will NW rescind my acceptance if I apply to schools on January 1st? I of course would prefer to go to NW, but no way I’m taking 200k out in loans.

Obviously, yes. I do take responsibility for that.

ETA…did you complete the CSSProfile and submit it to NU by December 1? That was the deadline for ED applicants.

Northwestern gives primarily need based aid. If you don’t qualify for need based aid, it is unlikely you will receive it!

As a music student, you might get a performance award based on the strength of your audition. You need to contact the school of music asap to see if you have been selected for a scholarship, and the amount anticipated.

NO…you cannot wait and wait and see what other offers you get. You should have a date by which you have to accept NU’s offer of admission…or not. When is that?

If you are a Music major, when are your other auditions? It is not likely that you will hear from these other schools anyway before you have to decide on this ED acceptance.

Exactly. I don’t think that OP is trying to game the system and have other offers to consider besides the NW ED offer.

You can’t take out 200k in loans, even if you wanted to.
