Early Decision and First Quarter Grades

I'm doing early decision to Duke and was wondering how much of an impact first quarter senior grades have? I've had nearly all As and A-s throughout high school except for a B in calc in my first semester of junior year. However, for my first quarter senior year, so far I already have a B+ and I think I might get 2 more Bs since I typically start the year weaker and then proceed to raise grades over time. My course this year is also much harder as I'm taking 6 AP classes. Will the (possible) Bs affect me very negatively and should I just do regular decision instead? Thanks in advance.

bump… please help :(

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that in ED they don’t even see your first quarter grades.

I believe that ED/EA schools do typically ask for first quarter grades.

Duke does require a first quarter grade report if ED’ing. Does anyone know roughly how much these Bs would impact me?

bump?

Multiple Bs may hurt, but it’s a holistic review. Only Dukes admission panel knows for sure.

nvm false alarm thank you guys though :)

hey sorry for reviving this thread, but i’m in a similar boat as you. my school goes off semesters and i was wondering whether first quarter grades were essentially required- i don’t have the best grades, as of the moment; also, how would one send those grades? thru common app?

Your counselor sends your grades. If you’re school doesn’t have have quarter grades or some official equivalent then colleges will request some kind of unofficial report of how you’re doing.

Yep, I had my counselors send them in.

Most highly selective colleges require “interim grade reports” so that even if your school is semester-based, your guidance counselor will ask your teachers to report your grade-to-date. Many high school teachers who have students who have had mostly As in school so far understand the importance of the interim grades and if borderline (e.g., B+/A-) might report the A- for the interim.
