Do colleges ask for a student's midterm grades when they are applying Early Decision or Early Action? Decisions are made before the marking term grades so I was wondering how much senior grades matter for early applications.

They will very often want your first quarter grades. Some schools don't record quarter grades, so in that case the college won't see any senior grades at all before making a decision for ED applicants. But, yeah, if your schools records quarter grades at all (or sometimes they're called 'first marking period' grades), then you'll probably be expected to send them.

After the decisions are made you'll also have to submit you semester grades and then end-of-year grades.

My daughter's school is trimesters so the term is not over until Christmas time. The school sends out midterm grades however so I was wondering if colleges saw those.

Double check the application website to see if they require the midterm grades be sent. (They would have no way of "seeing" them if your D does not request that they are sent.) Generally, mid term grades are not a factor in EA and ED decisions, but may be a big factor if the application is deferred to the regular admission pool, so your D should make every effort to do well in her classes.

If admitted, be sure to check the terms of admission - some schools have very specific GPAs they expect for senior year. (The UCs, for example, specify a 3.0 senior GPA.)

Konelit, your d's school sends out mid-term grades, as in mid-trimester? Or do you mean just grades at the end of each trimester? If the latter, then there's no way to submit more grades before ED decisions are made.

The college will want to see her grades for each term this year, but if they're only issued at the end of each trimester, they will be seeing them after they have made their ED decisions.

Her school sends out mid-trimester grades to each student. They are basically used for the students to gauge how they are doing and where they need to improve. Only the end of trimester grades are used for the final grade calculation.

Yeah, that's similar to the way they do it here, only on a semester system. The mid-term grades are not used for final grade calcuation either. I can only tell you what was true for us last year when my son applied ED. They requested the "first-marking period" grades be submitted. I called and asked and they said, yes, it would be those mid-semester grades, if the school issues them. The other kids my son knew who also applied ED were told the same thing by their colleges.

You could call the admissions office and ask. Is there a reason you don't want to send them? If there's no problem with them, then I'd just have them sent to make sure your bases are covered. If your daughter would rather the college not see them, you could just not send them and see it they notice and/or care. If they want them, they'd probably get back in touch and let you know that... at least some schools would.
