Early Decision Applicant to WAKE FOREST - College Calculus teacher is CRAZY

I have applied early decision to Wake. Believe I am a strong candidate. However, my PSYCHO College Calculus teacher has ONE math test each marking period. I was absent. She REFUSES to let me take it and has given me a D for the marking period! All other IB grades are A’s. Got a 35 on Math ACT. I do have Math aptitude.

Will A D ruin it for me? Do I send in the marking period grades and explain this? So upset. Wake has been my first choice for four years . I WAS so proud of my all A marking period - rigorous course load.

Does anybody have experience with this? Excuse my stupid name. My mom used it when she was helping my brother 5 years ago! Have you heard of anyone else in this kind of situation and what happened?

First, you need to get your own CC account. You’re not allowed to share accounts per the TOS.

Yes, if Wake sees a D they may put you in the RD pool or decline your admission. No way to know.

ok thanks. do you know if schools look for the first semester grades as an average or per each marking period? anyway, i appreciate your answer.

Your teacher doesn’t sound crazy and a D is harmful to your application. Wake truly does practice holistic admissions though so depending on the strength of the rest of your application you might still have a chance.

So there is likely more to this story than you are telling. My guess is that you either had an unexcused absence when the test was given or you were legitimately absent, but failed to schedule the make up test in the correct amount of time per school policy. I know that at our school, both of the above actions would result in a 0 score.

A “D” is not great. However, what worries me more is that you are failing to take responsibility for your actions. I hear a lot of whining and deferring of accountability. Re the admissions process… College want students who are going be successful academically, but they really want students who are not going to blame others when they make a mistake.

I think you need to take a long hard look at how you are approaching your life. You need to look at where you have fallen down and take steps to change your behavior. The upside of all this, is that it is a growth/learning opportunity. Come to terms with the fact that you F-ed Up and choose to do things differently next time. Really I see a great Common Ap essay here. Isn’t one of the prompts about a time you failed and how it changed you?

p.s…Using your mother’s account? Really?

This same thing happened with my son last year with a horrible calc teacher. He was also an IB student. He applied regular decision to Wake and we where so worried about the mid year senior grades, but Wake said they did not look at them. Also since his high school is on a year basis not semester. We found out that when they are asked to send a mid year transcript, they send out the last official transcript which was at the end of junior year. Wake will look at your final grades at the end of the year though and if you don’t improve this grade they could rescind your acceptance. My son did get accepted to Wake (although he is attending another school that gave him more merit money) and had the calc grade up to a B by the final transcript. Good Luck!
