Early decision apps to Northwestern Class of 2018 up nearly 15%

"EVANSTON, Ill. --- Northwestern University has received 2,828 Common Applications for the Class of 2018 under its early decision program -- a 14.73 percent increase from last year. The number was 2,465 for the Class of 2017.

For nine consecutive years, early decision applications have increased at Northwestern."

I believe someone already posted a thread about this, but it is definitely valuable information to be reminded of. Either way, I’m not at all worried, I’ll be excited if I get into NU, and I’ll be almost as excited if I don’t! I love my safeties and my RD schools

Does anyone know when the notification date is for northwestern? is it ever earlier than the assigned date (the 15th?) thanks

@uppersanddowners - what are your safeties? We need a few more safeties for my D, out of ideas!

Probably slightly less than a third of the applicants will get in since it’s likely that the number of students in the incoming class coming from ED will increase to at least 45% by my guesses from the 43% it was last year.

I hate to be petty and this is definitely great for ED students but as a current student who had applied RD it’s a little annoying! I am still baffled to this day as to how I even got IN to this school since 39% of my class comes from ED applicants. I find it so unfair since (I think although I could be wrong) it’s done to increase rankings.

@daphne66, I think you should pick safeties based on schools that your daughter would actually be interested in attending rather than just applying to schools just because someone else who is also applying to NU ED said those are their safeties. What if she does not get into Northwestern -touchwood, I wish her the best- and is left only with safeties, all of which she hates?

Will the ED admit rate decrease this year then? I read somewhere that 40% of the Class of 2018 will consist of ED admits. I believe the ED admit rate was ~33% last year.

The admit rate is around 33%, meaning that 33% of kids applying ED will get in. However the class itself should consist of about 40% ED applicants

Alright, so the accept rate should stay around 33% then?

Yup, it should

Actually, if you play around with test numbers, you’ll see that ED doesn’t affect the overall admission rate that much and admission rate doesn’t really affect the selectivity ranking in USN as much as test scores and percentage of students in the top-tenth of their HS class, which are likely pulled down somewhat by ED.

So no, it is not about ranking. It is about having more students having NU as their first choice, as President Monty mentioned.
