Early Decision at Harvey Mudd

My son has picked Harvey Mudd as his 1st choice college and has the test scores, grades, extracurriculars and recommendations to be competitive. He wants to apply in November via Early Decision which carries a commitment of withdrawing all other applications. However he can only afford to attend with substantial scholarships and grants.

HMC's web site indicates that 99% of applicants receive a financial aid package that will allow attendance, but my question is this - if he's accepted, but given a largely loan based package, is he obligated to attend under ED rules? We have saved enough for 6 years at an excellent in state college, but at Mudd can cover less than 2 years...

I believe you can withdraw from ED (if accepted) if the financial aid is not sufficient, but it is a hassle to do so. I am not sure what circumstances qualify the financial aid as not being “sufficient” though. I am sure others have a better idea.

I believe ED can be broken when aid is not enough to afford a college.

Thanks! It’s critical that he retains the option to attend in state if the aid package would leave him with a 6 figure debt. I’ve emailed HMC for more info on those pesky details.
