Greetings! I will be applying early decision to Cal Poly for landscape architecture.

My stats aren’t spectacular, but they are pretty much the average GPA/SAT in the Architecture College.

SLO is my first choice.

I took Honors English 9-11th grades and AP Psychology in 11th.
I meet all the coursework requirements Cal Poly asks for except 4 years of foreign language (I have 3).
Grades are all A’s and B’s.
I also attend one of the most competitive public high schools in the state.

CSU GPA: 3.85
SAT (CR+M): 1290 (1300 superscored)
AP Psychology exam: 5
315 service hours, club officer, Girl Scout Gold Award involving landscape architecture (equivalent of Boy Scout Eagle Award), 4 years marching band, competitive road & track cycling
Multiethnic, but listing as Asian on the app since it’s the minority.

The Arch. & Env. Design College stats are (for fall 2011):
27% acceptance
GPA: 3.87
SAT: 1253

I’m also applying to Cal Poly Pomona, U of Oregon, Virginia Tech, and UC Davis all for landscape arch. And then UCSB, UCSD, and SDSU.

Do you happen to know anything specifically about landscape architecture and how competitive it is to get in? There isn’t much information on it. The only thing I’ve seen is the VT average SAT for the major, which is really low–1139.

Harumi! I agree with your comments about your stats. However, you have a few good things going for you. You are female in a major with more male applicants (at least that is what I believe is the case), you are Asian/mixed race at a school that is one of the few elite campuses in California that is actually underrepresented with Asians (only 11% compared to up to 45% at many UC’s), you are also a band geek and an athlete and Cal Poly SLO loves both. By the way, we are also Japanese mixed and my son put down all his heritage and checked the multiracial box too. Multiracial is one of the most underrepresented categories at Cal Poly SLO too. Are you bilingual as well? There are only a few Japanese speakers at Cal Poly SLO. So, I might be able to introduce you to a couple. All the schools you are looking at sound great. VT is wonderful. You will be very competitive at CPP. All of them are nice choices.

OsakaDad, thanks for the response. I wasn’t aware that I could put down multiple races on the app, so I guess I’ll be doing that then!
And no, I’m not bilingual. As a 4th generation Japanese, my family’s a little Americanized haha.
Is your son in the landscape arch program?

Harumi!
My daughter was enrolled this fall and she is in the Sequoia dormitory now.
Most students here are Arch. & Env. Design College but she isn’t.
She is a 2nd generation Japanese and bilingual.
The more we know Cal Poly, the more we like Cal Poly.
Ganbatte kudasai!
