Early Decision Compatible or Not With Rolling Admission?

Hey guys -

Is it possible to apply early decision to a school and also apply rolling admission? I understand that you are allowed to apply early decision only to one school (I'm referring to the more per se, selective schools), but does this apply to rolling as well? I want to apply early decision to a particular school, but I also would like to apply earlier on in the year to a school with rolling application (since I hear that this often gives an advantage to getting in).

Thanks!!

I did and I’m pretty sure it’s fine. You’re also allowed to apply to Early Action schools as well. It’s not binding so I think that’s why it’s okay.

Haha thanks! I’ll be specific; I want to apply early decision to Columbia in the fall (I’ve got my heart set on this school, but whether or not they’ll take me is a different story), but I also want to apply early on in the rolling admissions process (guidance counselor told me that getting ahead of the game at rolling schools will help) for uMichigan or Georgia Tech. Is this possible?

Yes, that’s fine. If you get into columbia, it doesn’t matter if you got in to the rolling school as long as you attend Columbia.

You must read the specific instructions for each college very carefully. Generally, ED and EA schools will allow you to also apply to rolling admissions schools, but there may be restrictions. Some ED schools will also allow you to also apply to EA schools; others won’t. Some EA schools will not allow you to apply to other EA schools (i.e., Yale and Stanford are “Single Choice Early Action”). Don’t take anybody’s word for it–check the school’s admissions website.

Rolling admission seems to accept applications throughout the year, or a extended period of time. Rolling admission may be more binding.

rolling isn’t binding lol…

Yes, you can do this. There is no guarantee thought that the rolling schools will notify you early. This happened to a friend of mine who was banking on the early rolling thing. Some of us were notified in Dec and most didn’t hear until Feb/March (UWashington). You can get a better feel of the two you are looking at by going back over the threads from Nov/Dec/Jan.
