Early Decision: Does it help?

<p>Does applying early decision necessarily help you? I know the acceptance rates are higher (sometimes double the regular decision percentages) but doesn't early decision also involve better students and create even more competition. For example, I want to apply to Hopkins early decision which is about 38% acceptance as opposed to 17%. If early decision is really competitive is it any different than regular decision?</p>
