Is there an admissions advantage to applying ED II? S2 has come to really like CMC and it is now his clear first choice. He likes his # two and three favorites as well. He is agonizing over applying ED II, and feels that if it really improved the likelihood of an acceptance he would do it.

A few years ago, my son applied ED II and was accepted. Although we can’t be sure, I think it helped. I think the percentage of applicants accepted is higher for ED than RD. CMC only accepts 15 to 20% of the applicant pool, so if your son truly wants to go to CMC, I would recommend he apply ED.

It is looking more like he will apply ED II. I’m not sure I agree with the idea, but it is his choice to make.

does cmc break down acceptance rates for edII vs rd?

The College Board site posts some data, but there is no way of knowing how old it is or if it includes both ED I & ED II.

Most colleges disseminate common data information (CDS) for each class. I checked for CMC and there is a difference between ED and RD acceptance rates. For example, for the 2007-2008 entering class, the RD admission rate is 17.5% and the ED is 32%. For 2008-2009, RD is 21% and ED is 27%. They haven’t published data for 2009-20010, but they have indicated that the RD rate was 15.5% and that the number of ED’s had increased by 30%. I don’t know the numbers for next year but it would seem that your chances of being admitted to CMC are higher for ED.

In my previous message, I realized that I made a mistake. The RD rates, I refer to, are actually the rate of acceptances for the total applicant pool. This doesn’t change the overall conclusion; your chances of being admitted to CMC are greater for ED.

The correct RD rate for 2007-2008 is 16.5% and 2008-2009 is 21%. It seems to buttress the previous conclusion.

I have been wondering why they have an ED II. My guess is so they can pick up the high quality ED, EA, and SCEA rejections from first choice schools. If CMC is a firm #2 for some of these kids, it would make sense to apply ED II. Further, there are kids like S2 for whom CMC has moved into a firm first place who would like to have better odds of being accepted.

is there any info on edI vs edII acceptance rates? or edII vs rd? that is the subset i would like to see.

Unfortunately, they only provide cumulative data for both ED I and II.

Well, S2 applied ED II. We will have to see how it works out. He wrote a very different, in my opinion, essay. It was 5 pages long, but reads as though it is much shorter. At least the kid is willing to take some chances.

He sounds like a great candidate for CMC. I hope he gets in.

Thanks. Fingers crossed.
