if you are accepted ED and cannot meet the financial package offered to you, can you get out of the ED agreement?

That is what I have heard from several ED schools. I don't know if that means they undo your admission to that school--you don't get admitted to that school but you are free to choose any other school you like. Best find that out! Better yet, avoid ED schools. ED is evil. Look for Early Action schools that don't make you commit until 5/1(Yale, Stanford, Notre Dame I think; there are more)

As stated on the Johns Hopkins Early Decision FAQ list:
http://apply.jhu.edu/faqs/ed.html

"As an Early Decision candidate, you are eligible to apply for all types of need-based aid offered at Hopkins. Choosing Early Decision will not limit your financial aid options or consideration for merit scholarships. If you are accepted ED and qualify for assistance, you will receive an estimated aid offer along with your acceptance packet.

...

If we are unable to offer you adequate need-based financial aid, you may be released from the Early Decision contract. Because no additional need-based aid would be available to you as a Regular Decision (RD) candidate, your application would also be removed from consideration altogether."

It is important to note that when choosing to apply ED to Hopkins that students should consider the financial aid process. We provide our ED students with competitive financial aid packages and therefore this rarely becomes an issue. However, we do not encourage students to apply ED if they feel that they can only enroll if merit based aid is offered, since those offers are only released during the RD round.
