Early Decision question

Does anyone know the answer to this:

If you've applied early decision, what are the possible outcomes? Can you only be accepted or rejected or can you also be "deferred" to the regular application pool?

The Vanderbilt adcom seemed to indicate that they mostly accept or deny but that a small percentage (I think they said around 10%) may be deferred to the regular pool.

If anyone has heard differently, feel free to correct this impression.

We were told at PreVU this summer that if you did not make ED, you were NOT put into the RD pool, but that may have changed since

the year that i applied (two years ago) i know of some people who applied ED and were deferred. however, vanderbilt is going to be much more selective this year (due to the housing situation given the current number of students to available rooms), so i don't know if it will continue to hold true.

I took this directly from Vanderbilt's website:
"Students not admitted under the Early Decision Plan will either be denied admission or postponed to regular decision."

I'm pretty sure that if you apply Early Decision I and are denied you can still apply for regular admissions, but if you apply Early Decision II it would be pointless to deffer you do regular decision. If they didn't want you when you would be obligated to go, they won't consider you for regular decison. The regular decision deadline is the same day as Early Decision II.

i think statistics from either 06 or 07 indicated that about 150 students were deferred from early decision (ed1 i assume) and about 9% of those students were then admitted

I know the website says that early decisions will be mailed on 12/15. Historically, are they really all mailed at the same time? In other words, has anybody heard anything yet??

I believe all decisions are mailed at the same time for both ED and regular decision rounds. Those who receive interviews for scholarships and those who are invited to the minority/diversity event in March can all assume they will receive offers of admissions, but other than those situations and athletic offers, I don't know of anyone finding out early. The website typically features pictures of mass mailing from the admissions office when letters are sent in the spring. It takes a substantial number of student workers and staff to get all those Priority Mail envelopes ready. As mentioned in a previous post (maybe on another thread), the letters for ED are small. However, if your student applied for financial aid and an aid offer is made, there will be a second 5x7 envelope in the mail. Our ED student's financial aid offer arrived the same day. So for those parents who are dying to know, but who are instructed not to open the mail, that may be a way to prejudge the contents of the letter.
Also, don't have a meltdown if your student has a friend who has heard and your applicant hasn't. D has a classmate who got his letter one day earlier even though we live only about a half a mile away from him. The admissions office will provide answers over the phone, but only after 6-8 days have passed since mailing.
ED admits will get a Priority Mail packet at the same time as the RD folks containing their information on how to set up VUMail accounts, apply for housing, etc. I know several students who work in the admissions office, so unless things have changed this fall, I believe my information is accurate.

Interesting post at the Admssions blog: Vanderbilt Admissions Blog

apparently, they received several hundred more EDI applications this year than last. Math was never my strong suit, but if the total number of applications is about 1000 and that is several hundred more than last year, that would make it, what....close to or about a 30% increase?
